This simple DIY Scattered Herringbone vinyl decal is a fun way to turn your drab iPhone cover into a fabulous, pretty one! The cut file is included for your personal use.
If you have an iPhone, then you know the importance of having a great case for it. My hubby loves the otter box, but I’m a simple girl, and love my black Incipio case. It’s sleek and slim, yet keeps my phone well protected. Trust me, with a toddler around my phone gets dropped. A lot.
But it also frequently gets lost in the bottom of my purse or around the house because it’s pretty inconspicuous. So, I decided to add some bling to it with my Silhouette Cameo and some vinyl. Can I just tell you how much fun I had creating this little project? I’ve used vinyl on larger projects, but I think is the smallest little project I’ve done. And I almost couldn’t stop myself. I wanted to make tons of them.
I recently got the Silhouette Studio Designer Edition software, which allows me more freedom in creating my own files. {Stay tuned for a big sale at the end of the post!} So, I did just that! I created my own file for a scattered herringbone vinyl decal to go on the back of my phone case.
I’m not going to do a full tutorial, because honestly it took me a long time to create this. {I think being a newbie was the struggle. I think I’ll get faster as I create more. I had to start over a few times due to user error.}
But I’ll give you an idea of how I did it in case you have a different phone or another sized surface you want to bling out.
I first tried to use an iPhone shape I found online, but quickly realized it wasn’t going to work, so I scanned the back of my phone and used the shape tools to draw the outside edge of my phone and the camera cut out. I cut this basic shape out a few times on cardstock to make sure it fit my phone. I didn’t want to spend all my time on the herringbone pattern and then it not fit!
Then I designed the herringbone pattern and used the knife tool a bunch and the eraser tool a bunch to make it all look like this! {The knife and eraser tools are enhanced in the Designer Edition to allow me to create this. Love it!} I deleted a few of the “bones” in order to create the scattered effect. So fun!

I was so excited to cut it and see how it looked on my phone. Here is the vinyl on the transfer paper, ready to be put on the phone. I was almost giddy at this point!
Tada! I loved it!
But then I got the bright idea to cut it out of a couple more colors. Then I placed the cut outs into the empty spaces by hand. Now, I’m obsessed!

It’s not very often that a craft turns out exactly the way I imaged, but this one did! It was worth all of the cutting and erasing I had to do in the file just to get this on my phone.
And if you’d like to pin it for later, here’s a pinnable image. Just hover over it and a “pin it” button will appear in the top left corner. Thanks!
