Look at me. In a huge old gust of ‘blast from the past,’ I’m doing a review and giveaway. There was a time when this blog (under its The Truth About Mummy incarnation) literally lived by the light of reviewing products and giving them away to you good people. And it was so awesome. The fun of having goodies couriered to your door, getting to test them out and then give them away was seriously a shining beacon of awesomeness during my stay at home mum years. And I got to giveaway some good shit. Kitchen appliances, washing machines, hamper – you can go and check them out if you really want to – but why would you! Suffice to say I loved doing it and so when this offer landed in my inbox I got a tad nostalgic and thought let’s relive the magic.
So here I am. Right back where I started. Giving away DVDs. Do people still watch DVDs? I actually had to swap on to the husbos old laptop so I could watch it. Since we moved out of the world of Dora and the Wiggles we haven’t even replaced our old DVD player so I’m out of touch. (Hello Netflix).
Anyhoo – Tully is a pretty good reason to head back to the DVD player. It’s one of those movies where all the pieces don’t really fall together until the end – but when they do you’re nodding your head and glad you spent the 92 minutes on the couch with your feet up and a cup of delicious coffee in your hands. (Well Fridays are my day off work – I’m totally allowed to relax.)
Anyone who has had that experienced of crashing thru motherhood is going to relate to Charlize Theron’s Characte, ‘Marlo’. She’s a mum of three, including a newborn and a “quirky” young boy, and she’s exhausted. Remember that feeling of ‘falling thru the days’ and not thinking you’ll never have a singular sane or independent grown up though again? I do and so found Marlo incredibly relatable. I may have even shed a tear or two remember just how tough that world can be.
So Marlo’s brother, seeing her struggle, gifts her a night nanny. Yep you read that right a night nanny. I had no idea that was even a thing. (And exactly why didn’t my brother gift me one third time around? Must ask him next time I see him.) And that’s when the story gets interesting as we see how Marlo and Tully impact on each other’s lives.
But towards the middle of the movie, I’ve got to say, it almost lost me. There is this one scene where I was left thinking ‘you can’t be serious!’ I was that close the walking away. But I’m so glad I didn’t because as I said all the pieces don’t fall together until the end and then you’re really glad you stuck it through. Like any stressed out mumma Marlo really deserves people who can stick it through with her and wait to see where her story ends – without judging the middle bit.
Have I peaked your interest? If you haven’t really seen Tully then I’d recommend it. It’s M rated with a few F-bombs and a wee sex scene – so not one to watch with the kids around. But what really appealed to me was that pure and simple it’s a great story. ( If you know me you’ll know – I’m all about the story.) Tully is available on DVD and Blu-Ray now. You can get more information at The Viewing Lounge.
