There is undeniably a onesies craze taking over the globe! We’re sure you have all spotted kids, adults and even celebrities wearing their animals onesies, not just in the house, but out in public. It doesn’t stop there, because these garments even have dress up parties dedicated to them.

So what is it about the onesie that has led them to become one of the biggest fashion trends?

Originating from Japan, the trend started off as Kigurumi, a word that refers to the costumed performers who dress up as cartoon characters in Japan, predominantly animals. So we have Japan to thank for the trend that has lately been consuming the streets, parks and parties.

Spreading from Japan, the Kigu brand was created, which marketed their onesies to festival goers as a fun, loveable and comfortable alternative to their regular festival gear. You could become a cow, a tiger, a dragon… just about any animal, mythical or other, that you can think of… and the fad has now translated from festival wear to streetwear and its spreading fast!

One of the major reasons for this is because the trend has received the celebrity stamp of approval think Lily Allen in a Pink Panther suit, Rita Ora as an owl, Miley Cyrus twerking in a unicorn onesie, Amanda Holden, Shayne Ward and even Brad Pitt is rumoured to have been spotted wearing a onesie! However, the biggest animal onesie culprit is none other than model Cara Delevingne (she’s been just about every animal you can think of, a tiger, a monkey and a panda the list continues).

So we have celebrities to thank for launching the Japanese fashion subculture and infiltrating our streets, even parties as nightclubs are now hosting onesie parties (dress code: no onesie, no entry)

Given that the onesie is a garment that’s comfortable and fun for places like festivals, they don’t seem to be the most practical item for the streetwear, here’s why: You have to take off the entire suit to go to the toilet, they look a bit like baby clothes on adults, you’re dressed as an animal when you could be wearing that cute cropped that’s abandoned in your wardrobe and you’re dressed a giant lion… cool!

Onesies made headlines again, when a former political operator who was one of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s most influential aides launched a push to have “ridiculous, ugly” onesies banned. In fact Mr Rudd’s former press secretary has issued a public petition titled Gen Y: Please Stop Wearing Onesies.

“Gen Y are adults now and it’s time for them to start acting like it and stop wearing nappies,” said Mr Harris, who created an online petition named Gen Y: Please Stop Wearing Onesies.

“Onesies are for little people in nappies who are completely reliant on their parents and while this may sound like Gen Y, it’s not what they are like anymore,” Mr Harris told news.com.au.

Although we admit that the whimsy of the whole craze is very appealing but if politicians even want the trend to end, perhaps it’s time to put that animal onesie back in your cupboard?

Tell us, would you wear an animal onesie out in public or is it best left for around the house?
