President Obama predicts UConn will retain women’s title

While President Barack Obama’s second term is coming to an end, he sees the reign of Geno Auriemma and the top-ranked Connecticut Huskies continuing for a fourth straight term as NCAA women’s basketball champions. The president, making his annual picks for ESPN, is choosing UConn to beat Notre Dame on April 5 in Indianapolis. It’s the fifth time in seven years that Obama is selecting the Huskies. He correctly picked them in 2015, 2014 and 2010, and his selection of the Huskies in 2011 was wrong as Texas A&M won the national title. He’ll discuss his selections in detail on SportsCenter on Thursday morning. Obama picked Kansas to win the NCAA men’s basketball championship on Wednesday. UConn also won the title in 2013 as Obama incorrectly picked Baylor to defend its crown, which he predicted in 2012. While President Obama also selected South Carolina as his third No. 1 seed to reach this year’s Final Four, he does have a surprise…

Anderson (Broncos): C- The possibility of an Anderson signing was covered in this space when Miami initially submitted its offer sheet, but it’s bizarre to think that the Broncos chose to match. Again, the Broncos didn’t think it was worth the extra $900,000 or so it would have taken to slap Anderson with the second-round tender instead of the lowest-tier tender, which opened up the possibility of him getting an offer sheet. Now, they’ll pay Anderson $5.6 million in guaranteed money this year,…

Once hands off, sense of urgency now drives Phil Jackson

LOS ANGELES — Phil Jackson sat about 10 rows up from the New York Knicks bench on Sunday night as his team played yet another meaningless game against the Los Angeles Lakers. The game was ugly. Except for the back and forth between Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony and Kobe’s former teammate Sasha Vujacic, it will be forgotten quickly. Neither team is going to the playoffs. Whatever nostalgia may have been conjured up by seeing Bryant and the coach with whom he won five NBA titles in the same basketball arena one last time before Bryant retires was just a fleeting emotion. Mentally and spiritually, Bryant has already moved on and is just trying to enjoy his final 15 games for what they are. Jackson is the one in transition, metaphorically and existentially as he sat above the Knicks’ bench but still with the Lakers in the field of view. At the end of the first quarter, Lakers fans stood to applaud as Jackson was…

Creme: Women’s committee got bracket right

Less than 24 hours after the men’s selection committee got pounded by media and fans alike for its selections, seeding and geographical placement, the women’s committee took its turn. Unlike their counterparts on the men’s side, the women’s committee got it right. Not that the committee needs my validation, but this group doesn’t leave much to be criticized. My last projections produced two misses, but neither is worth quibbling over. The teams that got in were just as worthy as those that didn’t. So this year, I forgo the usual critique with some observations and explanations. Notre Dame, not South Carolina, to Lexington. This may be the most interesting situation in the entire bracket. South Carolina stayed the No. 2 team overall on the committee’s board with Notre Dame as the No. 3. It’s an evaluation many fans and media disagreed with throughout February as the committee revealed its top-10 three times and it’s a topic committee chair Chris Dawson has admitted all…

Giants pitcher Johnny Cueto takes line drive off forehead

MESA, Ariz. — San Francisco Giants pitcher Johnny Cueto returned to Scottsdale to be evaluated by team doctors after the right-hander was hit in the forehead by a line drive Monday night. The team initially said he was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons before clarifying that team doctors were handling his care. Manager Bruce Bochy said Cueto was being treated for a contusion and monitored for concussion symptoms. “We are going to monitor him tonight, tomorrow for concussion symptoms, but he’s shown no sign of that, so he’s just being treated for a contusion,” Bochy said after the game. “He responded well out there. It’s why he stayed in the game; he answered all the questions from our trainer out there. … He wanted to stay out there. We did take him back to have our docs look at him at our complex.” Cueto was struck by a ball hit by Oakland Athletics leadoff man Billy Burns. He underwent a quick check of his ability to…
