Walk with us through London Neighborhood Marylebone today!! We have set ourselves the goal to see as many different parts of the city while living in London. Life often makes you fall into routine, but through this series we hope to see and enjoy London just a bit more, while giving you our best tips for sights, shops, restaurants and unique experiences along the way.

Let’s Explore Marylebone!

TIMEOUT LONDON: “Marylebone has been an incredibly fashionable area in London since at least the seventeenth century – as the catalogue of famous residents (past and present) attests. With Oxford Street as its southern border, Marylebone is of course a world-famous shopping destination, but a quick look around the side streets reveal specialist shops and boutiques that sell everything from Stradivarius violins to plastic buttons.”

We start our walk at Baker Street Station. Passing the crowds lining up for Madame Tussaud’s, we quickly dive into Luxborough Street and can feel us getting calmer right away. At our apartment, we live next a busy road with cars, buses and many police cars and ambulances and other noisy items flying past the window. So walking in a pretty quiet street like this felt very relaxing.

Can you spot the little bird on the balcony?

We reach the Paddington street gardens, a little patch of green where on this sunny day lots of people soak up the sun and hang around. On a small sign, we read that these gardens are from the 18th century and were originally built as an additional burial ground for the local church.

Along with another burial ground close to this site, there are over 80.000 graves here. But nothing of that really shows these days. Since 1885, the gardens became a recreation ground and most tombstones have been removed, except for the stunning mausoleum (by the Honorable Richard Fitzpatrick, built for his wife Susanna that died when she was 30) that you can see below.

What we liked best about the gardens were the arrange of plants you can find here. Apparently the ‘London Plane’ is the most common (can be found everywhere in London) as it thrived best in London’s polluted atmosphere back in the days (and still a bit, really).

Walking around Manchester Street and Blandford Street towards the High Street, there are some amazing buildings to check out which really make you feel step back in time just a little. They are nicely blend in with the modern shops and restaurants scattered around Marylebone.

Blandford Street

Thayer Street

Manchester Street

What a good British Pub should look like

We reach the main street, which is packed with amazing shops and boutique restaurants. Not your average stops though, you can see this is a neighbourhood where people are quite well off. A selection of our favourite pit-stops:

Marylebone High Street

Anthropology: Chain selling boho-chic womenswear, shoes, accessories & home decor. Fun Fact: We didn’t actually go into this shop, haha, but I’ve heard many people love it :)

Skandium: “Light-filled showroom for upmarket and high-concept Scandinavian-designed furniture and homewares” Fun Fact: They sell my favourite design brand iittala, of which I visited the factory back in Helsinki, Finland.

Daunt Books: Travel specialist/general bookstore with original features including oak galleries and skylights. Fun Fact: Definitely don’t miss it!

La Fromagerie: “Small wooden benches in front of the famous cheese room for sandwiches and deli snacks”. Fun Fact: Besides cheese, you can buy homeware and many other fresh foods (and cake. don’t miss the cake)

The Conran Shop: “3 floors of chic contemporary furnishings including design classics and one-off vintage pieces”. Fun Fact: Nick works for this company’s architectural firm!

FishWorks on Marylebone High Street

Movie Poster shop on Thayer Street

If you keep walking down the High Street, you’ll notice it turns into Thayer Street at one point. This is another lovely street filled with restaurants and ending into James Street, where you’ll find a nice square to spend some time before it’s back into the real world and the chaos of shopping tourists at Oxford Street.

We couldn’t believe the weather and scooped up an ice-cream from a stand alongside the road. So good!

Barrett Street

And we’re back at Oxford Street’s Madness!

Marylebone London: a quiet little escape from busy inner city London with plenty of spots for design and food lovers.

Marylebone Station: We started at Baker Street Station, walking South to Bond Street / Oxford Street Station.

Marylebone Restaurants: We had a lovely lunch at La Fromagerie (2-6 Moxon Street, London W1U 4EW)

Anthropologie (33-34 Marylebone High St, London W1U 4PT)

Skandium (86 Marylebone High St, London W1U 4QS)

Daunt Books (83 Marylebone High St, London W1U)

The Conran Shop (55 Marylebone High St, Marylebone, London W1U 5HS)
