Earlier today, Deals We Like wrote a nice post about Southwest flying to the Caribbean, and I wanted to make my readers aware of the new routes that Southwest will begin to fly later this summer!
As decided earlier this year, Southwest will now be flying to Montego Bay, Jamaica, Aruba, and Nassau. This is clearly a move to compete more directly with JetBlue, which pretty much owns the Caribbean market with their San Juan, Puerto Rico hub. You can check out JetBlue’s route map on their website.
What cities can you catch a Southwest flight to the Caribbean?
Aruba flies to Orlando, Atlanta, and Baltimore
Montego Bay flies to Orlando, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Chicago
Nassau flies direct to Baltimore and Atlanta
I find it weird that there is no Ft. Lauderdale or Orlando flights to Nassau, since they are so close to each other, especially since Southwest already flies from Ft. Lauderdale to San Juan.
Want to Get Some Southwest Miles?
Then apply for the Southwest credit cards. I detailed a way to get over 100,000 miles quickly before, and how that gets you close to a companion pass. The companion pass will allow you to bring a companion along for free, on any flight you fly with Southwest, whether it is paid or on points.
Southwest is a great airline for those flying domestically in the United States, and increasingly, in the Caribbean. Will we see take some customers away from JetBlue? I don’t think so, until they add more routes to more islands in the Caribbean, or establish a hub like JetBlue has. Time will tell.
