David says I am an easy wife to please - 'give me a five-star hotel and I am happy anywhere!' Personally, I think that's a bit harsh, although I do confess to being partial to a comfortable bed, crisp sheets, fluffy towels, and a nice, modern bathroom - add in a flat screen TV, complimentary wifi (I am a blogger after all) and a separate living room, and I am in seventh heaven. At Fraser Suites Perth, we had all that and then some. Our particular suite had the ultimate of all active traveller extravagances - a washing machine and dryer!

Serviced Apartment Hotels

If you have never stayed in a luxury serviced apartment, you don't know what you are missing. You get all the facilities of your own apartment with the service of a hotel. It is the best of both worlds. There is no making your bed or tidying up the bathroom in the mornings - just like a hotel, that is done for you. If you feel like a night in, the kitchenette is perfect for simple meals. If not, there's a restaurant downstairs, or chef-prepared meals delivered to your door. If you need advice on local activities, there's help available at the hotel desk, but if you want to be alone. press the 'do not disturb' button and live in your own private world for a while.

Our Apartment

During our recent stay at Fraser Suites Perth, David and I stayed in a One Bedroom Executive Suite. It had a modern kitchenette with refrigerator, convection microwave, electric cooktops and dishwasher. The kitchenette was great in the mornings for making a quick breakfast and putting together sandwiches for lunch. Anyone who has followed our blog for a while will know that we are avid leisure cyclists for whom 'taking our own lunch' is one of our 'six essential rules of holiday cycling.'

With total floorspace of  55 sq m (592 sq ft), we had room to relax in the evenings after a hard day's sightseeing. I am an early riser and David is definitely not, so the separate living and bedroom areas let me sneak out of bed early to work on our travel blog.

Did I mention the washing machine and dryer! I read a blog post recently by a traveller who listed hints for stretching out his clothes between washes. Some of the advice was positively unhygienic - did you know you can put your jeans in the freezer overnight instead of washing them - and I can't bring myself to tell what he did with his underwear. It may work for some (guys mainly, I imagine), but I'm flat out wearing a blouse for a single day without washing it.  I fantasise about having my own washing machine and dryer to deal with all the sweaty cycling gear on holidays.

Restaurants and Room Service

I have to confess, in five nights at the Fraser Suites, we didn't eat at the Heirloom Restaurant once. It's not that it didn't look inviting - it did. It's just that, at the end of an exhausting day there is nothing in the world quite like having dinner delivered to the door. David and I consider ourselves world experts when it comes to hotel room service, and the meals at Fraser Suites were some of the best we have had. The menu and food came from the same, excellent, kitchen as the restaurant. We got all the taste and presentation of a stunning chef-prepared meal, in our own private surroundings.

Location

Fraser Suites is in Adelaide Terrace, East Perth. Our room faced north with a clear view of  the WACA ('West Australian Cricket Association') ground. David was in seventh heaven. He says we're going back next time there is a match on so he can watch live cricket from the living room.

The WACA as seen from our living room window. David thought this was great.

Nearby Attractions

The heart of Perth's business district is a few minutes away by car and by foot the walking/cycling paths along the Swan River are also nearby. You can cycle all the way to Fremantle and back if you the energy or do what we did and go one way by train. Headed north, the Swan River path leads past some lovely scenery.

A SpinwayWA automated bicycle hire station is right outside the hotel entrance and the super-friendly guys at About Bike Hire are near the river just west of Heirisson Island causeway.

The Swan River walking and cycling path is just a few minutes from Fraser Suites.

Don't, whatever you do, miss taking the 10 minute walk to Heirisson Island. On the western side of the island you will find a nature reserve, complete with resident kangaroos. They are easy to find, especially if you go in the early morning or late afternoon.

For a taste of Perth's restaurant and cafe scene close by, head to the Albany Highway at Victoria Park.
