It’s time to automate your house with some of these cool gadgets. They’ll take you one step closer to living like the Jetsons.

Airocide

If you’ve ever seen the movie Space Balls, you might remember the scene where Mel Brooks greedily inhales a can of Perri-air. The joke that fresh air is in short supply becomes less funny by the day. There’s even a Chinese company selling canned air right now so people in smog-filled Beijing can catch a fresh breath.

It hasn’t come to that point in the U.S. yet, but many homes could use a little freshening. That’s why the Airocide is a must have for homes and apartments. NASA originally created Airocide technology to make air better on the Space Station. Today, your home can automatically supply cleaner air with this portable device.

The Airocide isn’t that expensive. Plus, you can take it with you when you move. So, while you’re perusing new apartments on ForRent.com, know you can take your fresh air with you.

Kwikset Kevo

You still fumble for your keys when you forget to leave the porch light on? You are so 20th century.

Kwikset Kevo eliminates that hassle by automatically unlocking doors for you. As long as you have your smartphone with you, you just touch the lock to make it open. You don’t even need keys (although, there is a keyhole for Luddites who need them).

Kwikset can also work with an electronic key fob. That makes it useful for anyone who hasn’t upgraded to a smartphone yet.

Nymi

Kwikset Kevo has one major downside: if someone steals your smartphone, then they can enter your home.

Nymi solves that problem by reading your unique cardiac rhythm. Once you put on your Nymi, it recognizes who you are and lets you control many of your home’s accessories. You can set it to detect specific motions, allowing you to open locks by moving your hand in a certain motion.

You can also use Nymi to mobile devices so they can alert you when you get a text, email, or push notification. Nymi not only automates your home; it automates all the devices in your life.

Irrigation Caddy

A good home needs a garden. Unfortunately, not everyone has a green thumb. A bunch of dead plants won’t get you any props from your neighbors.

You have one fewer thing to worry about when you install Irrigation Caddy. This irrigation controller lets you watch over your lawn and garden from your Web browser. It essentially takes the sprinkler timer concept, gives it a brain, and lets it do the job properly while consulting you when it needs some suggestions.

There’s just one downside: you still have to pull the weeds. Someone is definitely working on an automated process for that, though. Just give it some time.

Plant Link

Plant Link is like a smaller version of the Irrigation Caddy that will help you keep indoor plants alive and well.

When you buy plants to liven up your home, you don’t think about how much you’d have to bother with them. Mix those plants in with kids, work, and (hopefully) enjoying a glass of wine at the end of the day, and suddenly you have dry soil.

Plant Link will give you a modern kick in the butt by sending you a text message telling you to water your plants. It’s like giving your potted plants the ability to send you an SOS.

Roku 3

Roku has always been a great entertainment device. The small box lets practically any TV connect to the Internet to stream music, movies, and other content through channels like Hulu and Netflix.

Roku 3 has taken a big step forward by letting owners connect it to their computers and hard drives. It’s similar to a cheaper version of AppleTV. You just have to use Plex for Roku to get access to the content on your home network.

Plus, Roku now has over 750 channels. That doesn’t compare to your local cable provider, but most of those channels are worthless anyway. With Roku, you can get a lot of those channels for free.

With so many gadgets to revolutionize your home, you’ll need to start somewhere. Do you prefer gadgets that automate locks, or do you think more about watching a movie at the end of the day? What types of home automation do you want companies to focus on to make your life easier in the years to come?
