While Xbox Live was traditionally designed for use with video games, it also has the power to do much more including the ability to stream live TV and provide access to on-demand TV shows via 3rd party applications. There are three major service providers whom have released a native Xbox Live application for their customers in which I will go into more detail about below. Keep in mind, you must have a valid Xbox Live Gold subscription and an active subscription to one of the following services in order to use these streaming TV apps mentioned below.

Time Warner Cable

The TWC TV app was added to the Xbox Live marketplace just a few months ago and is one of the best streaming video apps. The reason for this is that it supports both on-demand video access as well streaming of live TV from up to 300 HD TV channels. These channels include AMC, BBC World News, Bravo, the Cartoon Network, CNN, Comedy Central and the Food Network.

Verizon FiOS

Verizon FiOS subscribers can download the FiOS Xbox Live app which features both on-demand video access as well as streaming of live TV channels. Just like the TWC TV & Xfinity apps, you’ll be able to use a Kinect for voice and gesture controls to search for shows, change the channel, and use the TV guide.

Comcast Xfinity TV

Unlike the Verizon FiOS and the TWC TV apps, Comcast’s Xfinity TV app does not support the streaming of live TV channels. However, you still get access to a large catalog of on-demand TV shows and movies to stream. Their library is updated on a regular basis so it should be easy for you to find the right TV show or movie to peak your interest.
