There’s often a price to pay for the crisp temperatures and colorful leaves of autumn—allergies!  But rather than sneeze and wheeze through another fall, people across the country are opting for a no-pain, no-hassle alternative to allergy shots: AllergyEasy sublingual drops.

Because the oral drops have a higher safety profile than shots, they can be administered at home.  Patients take AllergyEasy drops once daily under the tongue where they are absorbed into to the bloodstream through special cells in the lining of the mouth.

Stuart Agren, M.D. founded AllergyEasy in the 1980s to help patients who were not responding well to allergy shot treatment programs.

“Attrition rates were high because people didn’t have time to go to their allergist’s office once or twice a week for shots,” said Dr. Agren.  “I also found that young children were being turned away from allergy shot programs even when their symptoms were severe.”

Agren said that drops have been found to be safe for children younger than age 5 while shots aren’t recommended until age 7 or 8.

Dr. Agren developed the AllergyEasy drops that are now prescribed by doctors around the United States.  Sublingual drops are becoming increasingly popular in America, following trends in Europe where drops have become the treatment of choice for about half of all allergy immunotherapy prescriptions in Europe.

While fall allergens can be treated with antihistamines and decongestants, Dr. Agren pointed out that allergy immunotherapy—whether through shots or drops– has longer-term benefits.

“Medications treat the symptoms only.  Once a person stops the pills, the symptoms return,” said Dr. Agren.  “Allergy immunotherapy is the only treatment that has been proven to change the root allergy.”

In addition to being available through shots and oral drops, immunotherapy is also available through new prescription tablets recently approved by the FDA.  However, Dr. Agren said that they do not treat the same scope of allergies that AllergyEasy drops do.

“The pills are helpful with ragweed and different types of grass only,” said Dr. Agren. “With AllergyEasy drops, patients can get coverage against all of the country’s major allergens.”

The drops contain extracts of dozens of the most common pollens suspended in a saline solution.  As the body is exposed to these pollens through daily drops, it learns to “make peace” with the allergens and stop reacting to them with uncomfortable allergy symptoms.

In addition to standard hay fever, allergies can cause eczema, hives, asthma, chronic sinusitis, and recurring ear infections.

Dr. Agren said that it is gratifying to see the allergy drops help people rediscover their health.

“I’ve had patients who have battled chronic conditions like asthma and eczema for years and tried every medication out there,” said Dr. Agren.  “They start taking the drops, and they remember what it’s like to feel normal again. ”

AllergyEasy drops are available by prescription from participating physicians.
