There are different views on the history of Armoires.
We do know that armoires were an essential part of the kitchen as early as the 16th century when they were used as a kitchen cupboard. Armoires also have a medieval past as storage for ammunitions.
Somewhere around the 1800’s, when people started having more than one outfit to wear (gasp!), armoires were used as closets to store clothing. You may have seen a bedroom, in an old house, that had no closet. That ommission inspired people to use a tall cupboard-like piece of furniture known as an armoire as a closet for their belongings. These armoires were also known as ‘wordrobes’.
Somewhere around the 1980’s, armoires became popular for storage for TV’s and stereos. Since then, we have evolved to creative uses for armoires in other rooms such as in a kitchen to store pots and pans.
Whatever the use for an armoire, they still are a popular means for storage.
