Baroque music for headbangers

According to a New York Times profile of Rachel Barton Pine from a few months ago, the not-yet-40-year-old Chicago-based violinist—who has determinedly claimed the identity of violinist since age 5, when her family could afford neither music lessons nor even the gas to get her there—takes headbanging as her gold standard. She wants 18th-century music, on 18th-century instruments, to stir people as much as Slayer moves metalheads. Tonight she’s leading/joining Seattle Baroque Orchestra. She’ll play the viola d’amore, the seven-stringed cousin of the violin that was the hotshot of its day, in a program by Vivaldi, Telemann, Handel, and Pisendel.
