Cannes Lions has chosen its first wave of 2017 jury presidents. The Creative Effectiveness, Entertainment, Innovation and Health Jury Presidents will be announced next month.

Those jury presidents are:

Film Craft Lions:

Robert Galluzzo, Founder/Executive Producer, FINCH, Australia. Galluzzo’s passion and investment in innovation has led to the launch of many high profile technology creations including, among many others, the Most Powerful Arm – a Black Pencil winner, and 37 Degrees.

He commented, “True film craft is not found in the broad strokes but in its minutiae. I’m looking forward to leading a vigilant jury who are not just blinded by the glitziness of the big stuff.”

Cyber Lions:

Colleen DeCourcy, Global Chief Creative Officer, Wieden + Kennedy, Global. DeCourcy leads the eight-office global network of Wieden+Kennedy alongside Global President Dave Luhr.

“This is the 20th year that there will be Cyber Lions awarded in Cannes and it’s exactly 10 years since the last time I chaired this jury. What I’m looking for in the work is some kind of proof of progress. Have we moved the ball forward? Are we more sure what cyber means, or less? My hope is to nail a progressive definition of this category that will inspire the same kind of urgency and discomfort in the business as it did in the beginning.”

Digital Craft Lions:

Henry Cowling, Creative Director, UNIT9, UK. Cowling has helped UNIT9 to become one of the world’s most awarded creative companies. In 2013, he established UNIT9 VR, an industry leading virtual reality and immersive content creator.

“I’m looking forward to being shut away with some of the smartest people in our industry. To the debates and passionate defences, to the jealousy and gnawing self-doubt that come from studying the best work in the world. Most of all, I’m looking forward to representing the digital community who carry the torch for craft,” he commented.

Direct Lions:

Ted Lim, Chief Creative Officer, Dentsu Brand Agencies, APAC. Lim works with 28 offices across 14 countries. During his reign, creative icons like Andy Greenaway, Merlee Jayme, Agnelio Dias and Santosh Padhi have come on board and Dentsu has won a slew of new business including Unilever, Nestle, Adidas, Coca-Cola, Disney, Toyota, Qantas, Uniqlo, Dulux and Yamaha across the region.

He commented, “This is not rocket science. So I won’t make it sound like it is. We’ll be looking for innovative business solutions: is it different? Will it make a difference? Will it move people? Will it move business? We are not here to save mankind. But we won’t overlook something that reaffirms our faith in humanity.”

Design Lions:

Sandra Planeta, Founder & Creative Director, Planeta Design, Sweden. Planeta works with branding and design assignments both locally and internationally. Clients include Hästens, Peak Performance, Svenskt Tenn, Dirty Linen, Sofidel and ColArt.

Film Lions:

Pete Favat, Chief Creative Officer, Deutsch North America, USA. Favat oversees the LA and NY offices of Duetsch to deliver work that moves business and becomes a part of the cultural landscape. He has led integrated campaigns for Taco Bell, VW, Target, and Dr Pepper, and has helped add eight new clients to Deutsch’s roster.

Glass Lions:

Wendy Clark, Chief Executive Officer, DDB Worldwide, North America, USA.

In 2014, Clark was recognised by New York Women in Communications with the coveted Matrix award. Among other recognitions, in 2011 Fast Company cited her as the Brand Refresher on its top ten list of innovative Business Disruptors and the Advertising Women of New York recognised her as its 2011 Advertising Woman of the Year.

Media Lions:

Mike Cooper, Worldwide CEO, PHD, Global. Under Cooper’s leadership PHD was named Media Network of the Year 2016 by Campaign magazine and at the Cristal awards. In 2016, PHD had its best new business year ever, holding the No.1 spot in R3’s global league table for the entire second half of the year.

“Media is increasingly the key to successful consumer engagement. New media technologies are now being seen as more than just about efficiency, but also as a new, dynamic creative canvas. With this in mind, it’s a huge privilege to be heading up the Media Jury this year, and I’m really looking forward to reviewing the best media work in the world with my fellow jurors,” he commented.

Mobile Lions:

Andy Hood, Head of Emerging Technologies, AKQA, UK. Hood was featured in AdWeek as one of the ‘Top Ten Creative Minds’ in Digital and included in the BIMA 100 of 2016.

He commented, “Stories about artificial intelligence, holograms and robots have become the norm. And yet the mobile phone remains the core of our connected life, our single constant link to the information we need and the people we care about. The continuing drive to create more value, more engagement and more amazement from this connection is celebrated at Cannes Lions like nowhere else. It is a privilege to preside over this jury.”

Outdoor Lions:

Bruno Bertelli, Global Chief Creative Officer, Publicis Worldwide, Global.

Along with Cristiana Boccassini, he is the most awarded Italian creative in the world with 41 Cannes Lions, of which nine are Gold, one Grand Clio and one Grand Prix at the NYF. He became Global CCO Publicis Worldwide in May 2016, while maintaining the role as CEO of Publicis Italy.

Print & Publishing Lions:

Fran Luckin, Chief Creative Officer, Grey Africa, South Africa. After 20 years in traditional advertising, at TBWA Hunt/Lascaris and Ogilvy Johannesburg as ECD, Fran joined Quirk (now Mirum Africa) as CCO, driven by her desire to learn to use technology to create immersive, rich stories and experiences for brands.

“This is an exciting time for print. It’s a medium in transition, vigorously reinventing itself. Innovation is all around: in the marriage of print with digital, in the invention of unique delivery methods and in the burgeoning of Kickstarter-funded print magazine start-ups. Our duty as a jury will be to curate an inspiring portfolio of work, because it showcases a range of innovative possibilities for the future of print and publishing,” she commented.

Promo & Activation Lions:

Stéphane Xiberras, President & Chief Creative Officer, BETC, France.

Xiberras is behind the recent innovative Instagram campaign Like my addiction and the inventor of CAI (Creative Artificial Intelligence), a unique software robot that creates ads and effectively demonstrates the downsides of the industry. He founded BETC Academy, the agency’s internship programme in 2010 and in 2012 the BETC Start Up Lab, a commando unit within the agency, exclusively dedicated to start-ups.

Product Design Lions:

Ruth Berktold, Owner, YES architecture, Germany. Berktold has been a Professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich since September 2002 and currently holds a guest professorship at the City College in New York. Her company, YES ARC/YES Products, has bases in both Munich and new York.

Karen van Bergen, Chief Executive Officer, Omnicom Public Relations Group, USA. Van Bergen is responsible for all public relations and public affairs firms within Omnicom – a total of 11 brands including three of the industry’s top global agencies. She has more than 30 years of experience in the industry.

Radio Lions:

Mario D’Andrea, President & Chief Creative Officer, Dentsu, Brazil.

D’Andrea has been the CCO and President of Dentsu Brasil since February 2014, with clients such as Toyota, Canon, Ajinomoto, Nissin and others. His main belief is “The best ideas comes from real life. They live on the streets.”

Tham serves numerous roles at the global agency including insight digger, mischief-maker, strategic thinker, client partner, storyteller, idea champion, copywriter, UX designer, art director, ombudsman, therapist…and then he goes to lunch. In every role he strives to convince anyone who will listen that creativity is the most powerful competitive advantage a business can have.

Jose Papa, managing director of Cannes Lions, stated, “We’re delighted to present such a formidable team of Jury Presidents, selected for their razor-sharp skill and experience in their respective disciplines. Each member of this elite industry group knows how to recognise creative excellence, because they’ve been the force behind award-winning work throughout their careers.”
