The Britannia Hotel is an iconic hotel in the northern city of Trondheim. It’s a stunning destination hotel with a gorgeous spa. Dating back to 1870 (celebrating 150 years this year), the hotel reopened following a €140 million investment by its owner Odd Reitan. Re-imaged for the 21st century, the hotel still retains its unique sense of history. Contemporary yet elegant, it’s plush and refined, whilst being warm and welcoming.
You feel at home in an instant from the warm welcome at reception through to your connection with the staff. The hotel rooms feature the latest technology for light and curtain controls. The design is simple, understated and elegant. Modern art is punctuated through the rooms and the hotel.
What’s on the menu?
There are six bars and restaurants on site. My top pick is the fine dining Spielsalen, where you can indulge in the 6 or 10 course tasting menu (with paired wines). Also check out the casual French Brasserie, as well as Jonathon Grill which does grilled meat to perfection. The beautiful Palmhaven is where you will enjoy breakfast, or perhaps lunch or dinner. The hotel hosts acclaimed performers and they take to the small stage in Palmhaven.
A special note on the rooms, the beds feature the famous Hästens beds which offer one of the best night’s sleep you can imagine.
The Spa at the Britannia Hotel
The subterranean spa at Britannia Hotel is an absolute delight. You enter via a long corridor with a floor to ceiling plant wall which creates a sense of anticipation and expectation. The reception area is open plan with large welcome desk, fire and seated spaces. These are all crafted from natural cane accented with soft furnishings in a natural and beige palette.
I loved the low hanging Asian lanterns with bamboo print. These give a golden glow to the space and enhanced the mood for relaxation. The changing rooms are large and again modern and well-appointed with fabulous lighting throughout. Another tasteful waiting area is positioned by the tea room. Beyond here the wet and thermal area provide plenty of options for warming and soothing the muscles, pre and post treatment.
A compact swimming pool is surrounded by relaxing loungers and beside here is a large circular mineral bathing pool with a blue dome punctuated with led lighting. This is designed to mimic the night sky. It’s absolutely mesmerising.
The thermal suite has a Nordic sauna with glass doors which provide a sense of space in the suite allowing you to look out. There’s an aroma steam room, main steam room, laconium at a soothing 45 degrees and ice fountain and plunge pool. Lots of options to fill an afternoon of relaxation.
The Treatments at Britannia Hotel
Whilst at the Britannia Hotel I tried the relaxing massage. Whilst I prefer a firmer style of massage therapy, this was indeed soothing and relaxing. I did ask for firmer pressure which was deliver for just two minutes then it switched back to soft gentle strokes.
The Hydra Boost Facial from Elemis was a winner in my book. Soothing, relaxing, cocooning and comforting, the facial combined a series of deep cleansing phases. It featured a collagen and an algae mask plus stimulating facial massage. It finished with an application of serum, face oil and moisturisers. Under the expert hands of my therapist, my skin was left feeling hydrated and less dry. Perfect!
The best bits at Britannia Hotel
Relaxing in the sauna and cooling off in the plunge pools
The Elemis Hydro Boost Facial
Tasting Menu at Spielsalen
Breakfast in Palmhaven
I loved the contemporary design of the changing rooms
Room the improve
The massage should have been firmer as I did ask – therapists should take guidance from guests
Weekends can get very busy, so if you prefer quiet time, book mid-week
Perhaps a second brand on the spa menu would give a wider range of choice for treatment protocols
