Apparently based on a prize-winning novel, this is a coming-of-age story following a young lad Toma (Suda Masaki), who lives with his abusive father and younger lover, while his mother still lives in the area. As Toma embarks on his own sexual awakening he wrestles with the notion that he might become like his father. Sadly Backwater fails to capitalise on this potentially interesting set-up and is mostly a snooze, failing to adequately address the central notion of institutionalised violence against women.
