It is recommended by the National Sleep Foundation that adults should get 7-9 hours of sleep each night, children needing more. Since your mattress is going to be used 7 hours each night, why would you not want to keep it fresh and protected? The best way to make sure that the mattress you spend so much time on stays in “like new” condition, is to equip it with the best mattress cover you can find. These covers help to protect against moisture, mildew, sweat, accidental bedwetting, can be hypoallergenic and can help aid in allergy relief or with a dust mite allergy.

If you want something that is going to last, be sure to do your research, find one with a good rating, and not just buy the cheapest one you can find. I am going to help you decide on which protector is going to be the best bed cover for your needs by providing you with mattress protector reviews for you to compare.

Are Mattress Protectors Necessary?

Some may argue that mattress protectors are an unnecessary accessory for your bed. I know someone who argues every decision I make and if I were to buy a protector, she would tell me that it is a waste of money and if I just keep my sheets and blankets clean and don’t eat or drink in bed, there will be no need to protect my mattress. Some would agree with her, but those who do their research would tell her otherwise. With that said, this is why they are necessary:

Keeps The Mattress Clean

According to a study done by Ohio State University, 10% of the weight of a pillow that is two-years old can be filled with dead dust mites and their droppings. A mattress may also have 100,000 to 10-million dust mites inside of it. If you cover your mattress with a protector, it can keep those dust mites away and keep it clean.

Warranty

Any kind of moisture that hits your mattress shortens its comfort life by wearing down the foam. Without a protector, you will need to replace your mattress more often for that “like new” feel. Not to mention the fact that moisture and spills may void the warranty of the mattress.

Allergy Relief

Any kind of moisture that hits your mattress shortens its comfort life by wearing down the foam. Without a protector, you will need to replace your mattress more often for that “like new” feel.

How Allergies Affect Sleep

“Allergies affect from 20% to 50% of Americans”. Yes, allergies are a nuisance and can drastically affect your sleep which may cause drowsiness, irritability, and other issues that may just ruin your day. It was shown in a study that people who suffer from allergic rhinitis from hay fever and other different allergies, have more of a rough time sleeping and are twice as likely to experience insomnia and other sleep disorders. Those who suffer from a dust mite allergy, pollen, pet dander, and other allergies may also have a hard time sleeping.

Dust Mites: The Silent Stalker

Dust mites are tiny, itty bitty, annoying pests that live, eat, and sleep on and in your mattress and pillows. They are only around 0.4 millimeters long and enjoy feasting on the flakes of your skin that naturally shed off of you. These things are so tiny, so you may be asking yourself how and why they can be so dangerous, here is your answer.

As disgusting as this is going to make you feel, dust mites defecate in your bed and on your pillows. No, you can’t see it, but it is there. Their poo, for lack of a better term, contains a very potent allergen called DerP1.  If you suffer from symptoms such as eczema or sinus problems that just will not go away, this may be the first clue that you have a dust mite allergy, especially if your symptoms get worse when you are in bed.

The Sleep Study

Out of 591 people studied by French researchers who were being treated for allergic rhinitis and 502 who had no allergies, sleep complaints were higher in those who had allergies than those who didn’t. Here are a few numbers just so you have an idea; 63% of the study said that they felt they were not getting enough sleep, compared to 25% of the controls, 36% of those who suffer from allergic rhinitis said that they suffered from insomnia, compared to the 16% of the control group who don’t have allergies, and 42% of those with allergic rhinitis said they had difficulty falling asleep, compared to 16% of the control group.

If you ask me, it seems like there definitely is a link between allergies and sleeping habits. If you are an allergy sufferer, one way to help with this is to put a hypoallergenic or anti allergy mattress protector on your mattress and even on your pillows. The things that cause your allergies while you are sleeping won’t be able to penetrate your mattress and linger, thus helping to relieve your allergies, even if it is just a little bit.

What To Look For

Before you go out and buy the first protector you see, it is essential and beneficial for you to know what to look for or what you are going to be using it for. If you are looking for indoor use rather than outdoor use for camping, the features are going to be different. So, what exactly is it that you should be looking for? Let me give you a rundown of some of the things that you need to consider before buying one.

Everyday Use

Liquids and Spills

For Allergy Sufferers

Temperature Control

Comfort

If you are looking for just a little bit of protection, a cotton cover will suffice. No, this will not protect your mattress from spills or liquids, but it will protect your mattress from dirt and dander.

If you sweat a lot or are looking to protect your child’s mattress from accidental bedwetting, you are going to want something that is made from a waterproof fabric. The fabric will help to wick away moisture and stop spills and leaks from penetrating your mattress. Nobody ever wants to have to replace their mattress due to a small accident that just won’t go away, even after being scrubbed and power washed.

If you have allergies, you are going to want to look for something that will fully encase your mattress and something that has anti-allergen features. The full encasement will also protect bed bugs with the bed bug barrier, nobody wants bed bugs, yuck.

Mattress protectors that are made from latex and/or wool are best for regulating your sleeping temperature. A cotton protector by itself can be washed in the washer and is lightweight, but when you add in moisture-wicking and fabrics that regulate temperature, you may sleep more comfortably and cool.

Take a look here for our recommended heating and cooling mattress pads.

If you want something that is just going to add a touch of comfort while protecting your mattress, a quilted cover will work. These tend to be made from comfort enhancing fabrics such as cotton or polyester.

Luna Premium Hypoallergenic Mattress Protector

Overview

1 pound

Hypoallergenic

Waterproof

Machine washable

10-year warranty

Just as the title says, the Luna Premium mattress protector is 100% waterproof and hypoallergenic. This means that it is going to help shield against dust mites, allergens, bacteria, mildew, and mold for optimal allergy relief and better sleep. While using this protector, you may notice a change in your sleeping habits or even your skin if you have eczema from allergens. You may also feel better knowing that it is SureGuard 100% waterproof and always protecting your bed or your child’s bed from spills and accidental bedwetting. This is perfect for toddlers who may be in the process of potty training. I don’t think there is anything worse than having to spot clean a mattress at 2:00 a.m.

The Luna Premium has a cotton terry surface that is noiseless, naturally absorbs moisture, and will not change how your mattress feels, like some protectors might. It also fits like a fitted sheet which is a nice feature because other mattress covers may move around the top of the bed and cause some frustration. You don’t want to have to get out of bed in the middle of the night to move the protector back to where it belongs.

As if being waterproof and hypoallergenic wasn’t nice enough, this cover also has Airflow technology which consists of microscopic pores in the membrane layer that allow air to flow through naturally, thus keeping your body temperature regulated as you sleep. If for any reason you aren’t satisfied with it, you can use the 10-year warranty to your full advantage. Also, be sure to throw it in the washing machine quarterly for optimal protection and freshness.

LINENSPA Premium Mattress Protector

Overview

1 pound

Hypoallergenic

Waterproof

Machine washable

10-year warranty

The Linenspa premium mattress protector measures 60” x 80” for a queen and it designed like a fitted sheet so you never have to worry about it sliding around as you move in bed. The deep pockets allow for the protector to fit securely on mattresses up to 18” in depth. It is also ultra-thin, crinkle free, and vinyl free.

The vinyl-free materials used in this protector are safe for children and pets. It is also hypoallergenic and offers a noiseless polyurethane backing that helps to block dust mites and allergens. This will not change the way the mattress protector feels, it may, however, help those who suffer from allergies get a restful night of sleep without the sniffles.

The other nice feature of this mattress cover is that its polyurethane layer acts as a barrier for liquids. This is ideal for the mattress of a potty training toddler or for someone who may suffer from bladder control issues. If there is an accident on the cover, all you need to do is remove it from the bed, throw it in the washer and dry on low. If something happens and you need to return it, Linenspa offers a 10-year warranty for your convenience.

Classic Brands Defend-A-Bed Premium Hypoallergenic Waterproof Mattress Pad

Overview

Hypoallergenic

Waterproof

Machine washable

15-year limited warranty

Nothing is worse than ruining your mattress with a spill or accident, which is where the Defend-A-Bed comes in handy. This waterproof cover is meant to increase the lifetime of your mattress by protecting it from unexpected accidents and the effects of the environment around your bed. It will help to shield urine, perspiration, and allergens such as pet hair and dust mites. Having this protection will save you from voiding your mattress warranty and losing out on hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

You may be thinking that because it has the waterproof barrier, it must be noisy and sound like a crinkling candy wrapper, but it’s not. The barrier is under the terry fabric which makes it noiseless and comfortable. Also, this cover is breathable, which means that it won’t increase your body temperature while you are sleeping. You will stay cool and comfortable all night long.

The 22-inch deep pocket can fit over most mattresses and if for any reason, like if it doesn’t fit, that you need to return it, there is 15-year limited warranty. The warranty is a great feature of this mattress cover because in my own personal opinion, a company that offers a warranty, especially one for that amount of time, knows that they have a quality product. They know that sometimes things go wrong and they are able to back their product and give you peace of mind.

Do you have allergies due to dust mites? If so, the LUCID Premium hypoallergenic mattress is what you and your mattress need. Hundreds of thousands of dust mites can live in your mattress at any given time if it is unprotected. The dust mites love the skin that you shed each night and they feed on it. You also lose up to one liter of body fluid through your mouth and pores while you sleep. If you have a mattress protector, these fluids and dust mites can’t penetrate your mattress. The LUCID mattress protector is meant to cut off the dust mites food supply, your dead skin flakes, making it impossible for them to survive.

The deep pocket design of this protector is a fitted sheet style with a fully-elasticized skirt that keeps the protector in place. This means that you won’t have to worry about fixing the position of your mattress protector in the middle of the night. it is also soft, quiet, and breathable for optimal comfort. The top of it is made from a lightweight material that helps to maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature while you are sleeping. The waterproof barrier is a thin polyurethane membrane that keeps liquids and accidents at bay. Safe for pets and kids, it is an ideal cover for your child’s, pets, and your own bed. It is easy to take off and put on when it comes time for washing and works wonders for memory foam mattresses. Make sure that you follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions for washing and drying. SLEEP TITE Hypoallergenic 100% Waterproof Mattress Protector

Overview

2 pounds

Hypoallergenic

Waterproof

Machine washable

15-year warranty

If you have allergies that are caused by dust mites and pet dander, the SLEEP TITE mattress protector may be the cover that you want. We have read that dust mites feed off of the skin that you shed while you are sleeping and that they leave fecal matter in your mattress with a potent chemical that causes allergies. You can elude these nasty buggars by putting this protector on your bed. Once the mattress protector is in place, it creates a barrier that these mites can’t penetrate which means no more dust mites and relieved allergies.

While you are sleeping, you also lose roughly 1 liter of body moisture from your skin and pores. This moisture can seep into your mattress and make it more uncomfortable over time, and possibly a bit smelly. Not to mention, moisture filled mattresses are breeding grounds for mildew and bacteria. This mattress protector is 100% waterproof and will help wick away the moisture and protect from accidents and spills. The cotton terry surface is backed by a polyurethane membrane that makes the mattress protector impenetrable when it comes to leaks, spills, accidents, and moisture.

One more feature that is nice about this protector is that the unique design of it allows heat to pass through. This means that it isn’t going to trap your body heat and make you feel like you are sleeping in an oven. The heat will go through the mattress and disperse, creating a comfortable sleeping environment.

The Verdict

I have been reading these reviews over and over again and although they are all equally great, there can only be one winner, which is the LINENSPA Premium Mattress Protector – 100% Waterproof – Hypoallergenic – 10 Year Warranty – Vinyl Free – Queen / White.

The reasoning for my decision is because it has everything you could possibly want in a mattress protector. It protects against dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens. If you are someone who has allergies caused by dust mites, this is definitely the right choice for you. The other thing that I like about this mattress protector is that It is vinyl free, making it safe for pets and kids. This was a huge deal breaker for me. If I am putting something on my future child’s bed, I’d want them to be safe on it. Also, the fact that it repels all liquids makes it an overall great mattress protector. The 10-year warranty is there to help you if anything happens to the cover and if there is an accident on it, you can just toss it in the washing machine and call it a day.
