Make your own Patent Leather jewelry and accessories with this new Patent Leather paint!

When I visited the DecoArt headquarters last fall I got a sneak peek at some of the new products they would be debuting this year. Their new Patent Leather paint had me all kinds of excited! It is a high gloss paint that can be applied to leather and leather-like materials to give them the high shine look of patent leather. Once dry it’s completely flexible so it won’t crack, meaning you can apply it to belts, handbags, and just about anything else you can think of!
I tried it out on some faux-leather to make this bow necklace and matching bow bracelet. It turned out positively amazing!
To create the bows you will need leather sheets of some sort. This is white faux leather.
The Patent Leather paint colors are Bright Pink and White.
You will also need to download and print my bow templates.
Cut out the bow templates and trace them on the back of the faux leather. Cut out the shapes on the faux leather.
Two sizes of bows are included on the template.
There is a slight learning curve to using the Patent Leather paint. On the left, I brushed the paint on. It was pretty obviously not giving me the right look almost immediately.
On the right, I dabbed the paint on in little puddles that I would blend together. The paint will pool, removing any dimples in the paint.
Try to remove any air bubbles that appear.
Allow the paint to dry or “cure” for 24-48 hours as suggested on the bottle. With the paint being as thick as it was I left it for a good day and a half before coming back to it.
It definitely has that patent leather look. How about that shine!
Once completely cured you can create the bows. Fold the long ends of the bow to the back center and glue in place, one at a time, with E6000 adhesive. Glue the bow to the ribbon. Wrap the rectangle around the center of the bow and glue the ends to the back of the bow.
Now to turn the bows into jewelry!
You will need chain, jump rings, clasps, and a paper piercer.
I’m using the smaller bow as a necklace. Use the paper piercer to make a hole at the top of the ribbon, just behind the loop of the bow. Thread a jump ring through the hole. Before you close the jump ring, add the necklace chain. Repeat with the other side of the bow. Find the center of the chain and insert a necklace clasp.
I am using the large bow for a bracelet. I don’t want the ribbons of the bow to wrap around the wrist so instead of attaching the jump rings to the ends of the bow, attach them more towards the center of each side of the ribbon by piercing two holes and threading a jump ring through them. Attach chain prior to closing jump rings and add a clasp.
Don’t they look fun?
And they lay just the way I hoped they would.
