An eclectic mix of local and international artists will embark on Melbourne’s CBD between 11th – 27th October for the annual Melbourne Festival. The unique event will feature US band Active Child alongside the likes of British India, a DJ set by Dexter from The Avalanches , Gurrumul, Flight Facilities, Fuck Buttons, Hiatus Kaiyote, Oliver Tank and much more.

Other international acts on the bill include The Polyphonic Spree, Caitlin Rose (performing with our own Henry Wagons), Clannad, Cody ChesnuTT, Steve Mason (ex Beta Band), The Cinematic Orchestra,The Handsome Family and Foy Vance.

It seems the festival has taken the ‘something for everybody‘ approach but has maintained a lineup that is relevant and comprehensive. This year, the event will be scattered across venues and pop-up locations around Melbourne which have been devised by the festival’s Creative Director Josephine Ridge with the help of Declan Forde (co-creator of Harvest Festival).

Despite the big flashy names, I feel there’s a lack of lesser known, emerging Melbourne musicians – especially those who deserve some recognition – (think Twerps, Courtney Barnett, or the crew behind The Ocean Party).  That being said, billed act ‘Songs Of Wreck & Ruin’ will feature Tim Rogers,Paul Capsis and Megan Washington and is sure to quench that local thirst.

Tickets for the festival start at the bargain price of $25. All the info and tickets are on the Melbourne Festival website.
