The tapas-inspired menu at Seven at Brixton in Brixton Market includes a Full Spanish breakfast (chorizo, morcilla de burgos, fried eggs, pimenton beans, tomato and toast, with tea or coffee, £9.50), an open bagel with chorizo, morcilla de burgos, tomato and fried egg (£5), a mushroom omelette with chestnut and shiitake mushrooms, served with ciabatta (£6.50) and even churros con chocolate (£3.50). Seven at Brixton serves breakfasts every day (open from 9am Mon-Sat and 10am Sun) and brunch until 12noon Mon-Fri and 1pm on weekends.

Cornercopia in Brixton Village has just had a refurb and the new Modern British menu, created by chef @BlueJayBrixton, includes brunch dishes such as peameal bacon, poached egg, wholemeal scone and maple mustard butter (£8) and refried black beans, succotash, poached egg and chipotle aioli (£9). They’ll even do you a deal on their Heart of Bean coffee – £2.50 a cup or £4 for two. Served Saturday and Sunday from 11am-3pm.

One of Brixton’s most-loved weekend haunts for those who like their jerk chicken, Negril’s Caribbean breakfasts have sadly been off the menu for the last six months, but they’re due to return in April. So get yourself over there for the Negril brunch with jerk sausage, egg, bacon, mushrooms, beans, grilled tomatoes and chips (£7.95), a traditional Caribbean breakfast of ackee and saltfish with dumplings (£8.95), Caribbean toast (with cinnamon and vanilla, topped with toasted coconut and served with tropical salad, £8.95) or the Callaloo Special (callaloo – similar to spinach – is served with scrambled eggs, plantain, grilled tomato and Hardo bread (£7.95). Open Saturday and Sunday from 12noon.

4Senzala
Satisfy your crepe cravings at Senzala in Brixton Market. Open from 9am on Saturday and Sunday, its extensive list of both sweet and savoury crepes includes the Morning Glory (cheese, fresh tomatoes, crispy bacon and fried egg, £6.70) and a Full English (cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes, bacon and fried egg, £7.10). Team it with a chai latte (£3) or even a glass of milk (£1.20)!

A pioneer on the somewhat muddled middle part of Brixton Hill, just beyond the White Horse, F Mondays opened up in December 2014 to bring us great coffee. It’s invented some pretty nifty breakfasts too, offering up the likes of bacon and egg breakfast cups and smashed banana with honey on buttered ‘pannouzo’ sourdough toast. It’s cash only though, so don’t get caught short! Open Mon-Fri 7am-4pm and Sat-Sun 8am-5pm.

6Rosie’s Deli
Rosie’s Deli, a delicatessen and café with an eclectic, stylish, organic twist, is run by Rosie Lovell, labelled by the Observer Food Monthly as ‘a Nigella for the next generation’. Breakfasts are served all day, and include delights such as ricotta on sourdough with basil oil, honey and almonds (£6), scrambled eggs on toast with chilli jam (£5) and pickled Scottish herrings on rye with dill and apple (£6). Seven at Brixton’s sister operation, Three Eight Four on Coldharbour Lane, takes a more stateside approach to brunch, serving up a stack of American pancakes with maple syrup and blueberries for a fiver. Add bacon for and extra couple of quid. Both options come with bottomless coffee or tea to help you recover from the night before. Served from 11am on Saturday and Sunday.

8Duck Egg Cafe
The Duck Egg Café, which opened on Coldharbour Lane in 2010 as a small family business, has moved over the road to the Market House. Sadly this means you can no longer grab a Duck Egg brekkie on during the week, but every Saturday and Sunday from 9am you can still enjoy their popular all-day breakfasts, brunches and lunches. Try the Ottoman breakfast, for a Turkish twist to your duck eggs, or sample the Benedict Duck, Royal Duck, Florentine Duck, Double Duck or Vegetarian Duck. Note there’s a Duck Egg Café in East Dulwich, too.

Open everyday from 8am for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, Kaff Bar combines local resources and influences with Chef Myers’ New Orleans background to create some good old Louisiana cooking. Choose from American pancake stacks with streaky bacon (£4), American waffles (£3) and breakfast po-boys (£3 with three fillings – choose from fried egg, scrambled egg, streaky bacon and smoky sausage).

Burnt Toast in Brixton bakes a selection of fresh sourdough loaves in house which you can pop into the toaster on your table and toast just to your liking. They also serve up homemade granola and yoghurt as well as house-roasted coffee.

11Honest Burgers
Ok, this one is a bit of a cheat, because you’ll need to venture to Honest Burgers’ Clapham or Tooting branches for breakfast at the moment, but we’ve been told to ‘watch this space’ for their breakfasts heading to Brixton. They’re serving up Honest Beans on Toast (crispy smoked bacon and chipotle, garlic and chive baked beans on Guinness eggy bread with a fried egg, £6), a Full English with rashers of smoked streaky bacon, fried egg, Cumberland sausage, black pudding, Portobello mushroom, griddled tomato, Guinness eggy bread and Honest baked beans (£8.50). There’s also a Full English sharing tray (£15) with the works and veggie options. Available Saturday and Sunday 9-11.30am.

12Fantasia 2 Café
Technically, Fantasia 2 is in Clapham, not Brixton, but given it’s only a stone’s throw from the top of Acre Lane, I’m throwing it into the pot. This is the best spot for a cheap and tasty hangover recovery breakfast. A Full English with a tea or coffee and glass of fresh orange juice comes in at just under a fiver. It also does double breakfasts, eggs Benedict (plus its friends Florentine etc), veggie breakfasts and build-your-own breakfasts. Hits the spot every time.
