Chiswick’s pub on a barge, Sip Smith’s new distillery and Gail’s new baking book, Emily Manson gives us the best of West London’s tastiest food news this month

Ships ahoy

Following an extensive refurbishment, this much loved 14th century riverside pub has just reopened featuring a new stunning dining room, large open kitchen and a striking reclaimed Victorian bar. The interior retains much of the original architectural detail and period fixtures and fittings, including original Victorian panelling and three open fires, while quirky design touches include some rare bird taxidermy and a metre long Thames Barge. The menu from head chef Pat Lynch (formerly of Bentley’s and Scotts) will focus on seasonal British ingredients including their signature oxtail cottage pie and shrimp alongside seafood burger options such as squid burger with dill tartare or their whole soft shell ‘Crabacado’ burger with den miso mayonnaise. Seven regularly changing local ales and ciders as well as a selection of bottled lagers and stouts including Camden, Fordham & Dominion and Hogs Back Breweries can be found at the bar. Situated right on the water’s edge, it’s just the perfect location for a lazy summer lunch or early evening chillax while enjoying a riverside sunset. 27 Strand on the Green, Chiswick W4 3PH; 020 8994 2148; citybargechiswick.com

In the spirit
Sipsmith, West London’s iconic gin distillery is to move to new premises in Chiswick’s Cranbrook Road. Originally, the first distillery to open in London for nearly 200 years, the new site will house a third copper still – Constance – to sit alongside Patience and Prudence, so the handcrafted gin can keep up with demand. The new distillery, which will be open from late June, will still conduct tours and gin tastings to share the love of their 14 award winning gins and vodkas. sipsmith.com
