The St. John’s Maple Leafs took two games from the Central IcePak while the Western Kings and Tri-Pen Osprey split a pair of contests as the Newfoundland and Labrador Major Midget Hockey League’s 2015-16 season got underway over the weekend.
Sunday at the Glacier in Mount Pearl, rookie Kent Gillingham scored twice and Dylan Guy had one goal and assisted on another as the Leafs won 7-2. Nathan Kenny, Kyle McGrath, Dylan MacKenzie and Mike Williams added single markers for the winners.
Andrew Rose and Braden Kean combined to make 22 saves in net.Ryan Ricketts and Alex Saunders tallied for Central, whose Curtis Barrett and MacKenzie Landry faced 50 shots.
Guy and Danny Rice had two goals and two assists in a 10-6 Leafs win in the season opener on Saturday. Tyler Wall also had a pair of goals, with singles from Tison Ryan, Nick French, Cody Langmead, and McGrath. Josh Langmead made 36 saves for the win.
Kyle Champion led the Icepak with two, while Noah Kelly, Tyler Anthony, Riley Gill, and Ricketts had one apiece.
Barrett combined with Liam Hynes to stop 43 shots in the Central crease.
Western vs. Tri Pen
At the Corner Brook Civic Centre Sunday, Jacob Evans netted a pair of goals and Tristan Grey manned the blue ice in the Tri-Pen Osprey’s 4-1 win over the host Western Kings.
Mark Barrett and Ryon Williams also lit the lamp for the Osprey. Jonathan Anderson had the Kings’ only goal.
In the teams’ first game Saturday, after Western’s Ryan Roche tied the game at three, Nick Childs scored the overtime winner, in a 4-3 triumph. Robert Hicks had two for the winners and Luke House got the win between the pipes.
Nolan Maloney-Brown, Lyndon Thorne and Mark Barrett had the Tri-Pen goals.
