After sharing his freshly-squeezed juice experiments with family and friends, founder and vegetarian David Otto opened his first store in 1975 on Santa Monica Boulevard, then moved to his present-day location on Beverly Boulevard four years later. With an emphasis on using organic and locally sourced ingredients, Beverly Hills Juice produces a range of vegetable, fruit, coconut and ginger-based drinks as well as a Daily Citrus Blend featuring seasonal flavors. Its signature creation, the Banana Manna Shake, is a vegan alternative to ice cream made from bananas and your choice of an add-in juice.

A girl’s getaway to Palm Springs inspired Megan Propp and Stephanie Hubbard to enroll in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York and embark on developing a line of seasonal juice cleanses. In addition to the greens-focused Green Machine to fruity blends like PAMP (pineapple, apple, mint and pear), you’ll find set cleanse packages such as Reboot and Deep Dive, as well as the option of designing your own custom order. Products can be bought online or at Thrive’s San Francisco locations at the Marina, in the Financial District, and on Russian Hill.

When Charlie Gulick was diagnosed with a rare liver condition, he took up a prescribed raw vegan food regimen with an emphasis on juicing to improve his health. Menu items include an assortment of elixirs, cleansers and raw cold-pressed juices like the detoxifying Liver-Aid and Beta Green, a “super-root” drink that honors the man who invented the cold-press method the company uses.

Melvin’s regular “juice box” contains booster shots, and he also offers fresh single and mixed juices, as well as popular shakes like the Harry Fontabella, which includes rice milk, banana, either blueberry or strawberry, and hemp granola.

Boston’s Jugos

In Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, this juice shop near the Orange Line metro station fills up commuters and other customers with 12- through 24-ounce blended beverages that range from blends of common fruits and veggies to standout smoothies like the Menta Y Chocolate, which includes dates, mint, raw cacao, cinnamon, cashew milk, cayenne and banana. Detox cleanse orders can be placed online with three preset package choices, as well as a customizable option.

Literally started out of founder Matthew Sherman’s house, this Floridian food find juices up detoxers like Esta Too Hot (with various citrus fruits, ginger, cayenne, and camu camu), alkaline waters, shots, smoothies, and various sweet, deep and mid-green blends, as well as nut and coconut mylks. Four different levels of cleanses are available, and meals can be ordered too: salads, tapas, sprouted sandwiches, and sweets. There are four Miami-area locations, in South Beach, Miami Beach, Wynwood and Coral Gables.

Said to be the first cold-pressed juicery in Tennessee, this family-owned business developed after founder/co-owner Stephanie Waring turned to juicing to help with her health problems in 2011. She decided to spin what she was learning into a full-time craft, and thanks to a successful April 2013 Kickstarter campaign, Juice Nashville opened its doors last July in The Gulch. Inventory includes cleanse kits, gift boxes and an assortment of greens, nut-based milks and other specialty juice blends like Hot Stuff. Scheduled pre-order juice pickups are available daily, and certain local delivery options are available.

Colorful concoctions from Atlanta’s Dtox Juice

This Georgian smoothie and juice bar blends an assortment of 8- and 16-ounce juices such as Gold (featuring Brazil nuts, alkaline-and-coconut water, pink salt and turmeric) as well as milks such as Popeye Milk (with matcha, dates and, of course, spinach). You’ll find elixirs, teas, lattes and meals, too. Six different cleanse assortments target everything from weight loss or to boosting the liver and kidneys. Aside from edibles, Dtox Juice sells a Dtox Ginger Eucalyptus Bath product that can help in sweating out toxins at home, available for local purchase only.

Founders and Certified Holistic Health Counselors Mary Kathryn Bass and Leslie Needleman used their shared love a healthy and spirited lifestyle toward perfecting tasty pressed juice combinations. They use a non-high pressure process to extend their products shelf life to produce fruit-and-veggie  delights like Shine & Sparkle (with apple, celery, spinach, parsley andj alapeño) and lemony ones like Clarity Lemonade (with lemon, Grade B maple syrup and cayenne). Smoothies, special shot “gems” and three- to five-day cleanses are also available. In conjunction with The Gem, Bass and Needleman offer whole life nutritional counseling through their “Diamonds on your Inside” program.

Austin’s Juice Land makes a positive suggestion for the new year

Now the owner of 10 Austin-area locations and one in Brooklyn, New York, founder Matt Shock first found his calling through a part-time job at a juice joint. His Juice Land chain serves up pithily-titled fruit/veg juices like the catchy Rosie Cheek (with watermelon, raspberry, lemon and rosewater) or Xtra Holla Pain You! (named for its dashes of jalapeño and habanero) plus has four different cleansing level products. Also find fresh-fruit aguas frescas like peach watermelon and maté mint, along with raw-superfood cocktails.

Promoting clean, healthy eating habits for people on the go, Juicd Life produces cold-pressed and made-to-order centrifugal juices, as well as one-, two- or three-day cleanses (the latter of which can be ordered online). Eight types of juices focus on metabolizing, purifying and more, and healthy snacks and açai bowls can also be found here. Juicd Life has its own rewards program, where customers can earn points based on set purchase amounts.

There are also steamed-juice elixirs like Flu Slayer—a concoction of apple, lemon, ginger, garlic, Oregon grape and echinacea tincture—and shots like E3Live, a 100% blue-green super potent algae. In 2012, Sip opened Canteen, its shaker-inspired modern café that serves everyday American staples with a healthful twist.

Evolution first launched its juice sales in Starbucks and now has juice bars in three cities.

Though acquisition by Starbucks brought this company into the mainstream in 2011, founder Jimmy Rosenberg actually started Evolution Fresh back in 1995. To maintain freshness and flavor in its juices, Evolution Fresh uses high-pressure, cold-press processing methods to keep ingredients at cooler temps and maintain their nutrients. Evolution has three stores in the Seattle area and one in San Francisco, with juices that range from single and combined flavors like Organic Ruby Roots (a cranberry, cherry and root-veggie mix) to lemonades and green blends.
