David de Gea has insisted he is very happy at Manchester United amid rumours of Real Madrid’s reignited interest in securing his signature over the summer.

The Spaniard was moments away from a move to the Bernabeu back in August 2015, only for the move to fall through after Madrid failed to submit all relevant paperwork before the transfer window shut.

It has been reported in recent weeks that Madrid, after cooling their pursuit of De Gea following his contract renewal, have reaffirmed their interest in the keeper ahead of the summer.

But De Gea, speaking to AS, refused to talk about reports linking him with a move to Spain and made it clear that he was happy with his current situation at Old Trafford.

“Nobody knows the future,” he said. “The future is the future. I’m very happy at United, it’s a great club. In England football is much enjoyed. Madrid? I will not talk about that. On that I will not talk any more. Now I must stay focused with my club.”

“We are already in the final of the League Cup and we are still fighting for the FA Cup and the Europa League to continue making history in this club. We have to give the team time to win the Premier League again.”

It feels as if Jose Mourinho’s arrival has precipitated an environment that players – those playing regularly, at least – would find hard to walk away from. There is a new sense of togetherness and confidence pervading through this current group of players; that bond between player and manager, so sharply severed during the murky Louis van Gaal era, has been rediscovered.

And for De Gea, leaving a team clearly heading in an upward direction under the 54-year-old – for a club that can, more often than not, chew you up and spit you out – would be a questionable choice to say the least.
