This week’s BIG move: Kieno Kammies joins The Big Issue board of directors

CapeTalk’s popular morning talk show host, Kieno Kammies, has joined The Big Issue’s volunteer board of directors. The Big Issue is a social enterprise that publishes a magazine sold by vendors as part of a job creation programme.

“The Big Issue is an organisation which makes an impact, not only in its reporting, but equally in its ability to create sustainable employment and entrepreneurs, which is something this country needs, given our macro and micro economic challenges,” says Kammies.

“I believe that I will be able to contribute to a strategy that will take the current impact to the next level at The Big Issue, especially taking into account the increased need to not only deliver jobs but also the entrepreneurs who can create those job opportunities,” he said.

Kammies brings more than 23 years of commercial media experience. He also brings strategic business insight “not only through my own skills, but that of my broader business network as well”. He believes this gives him the valuable ability to “mutually beneficial and impactful networks, which business, government and knowledge institutions”.

Kammies has a lot of ‘big issues’, with youth unemployment a big deal. He wants to help empower the youth “to turn our economic woes around medium to long term”. Other issues are creating a climate conducive to entrepreneurship, corruption and accountability, cultivating leaders South Africa can look up to and who can “lead with integrity”. And of course, “Education Education Education”.

Facebook opens first African office in Johannesburg

Facebook has opened its first office in Africa to further the company’s commitment to help businesses connect with people and grow locally and regionally. Based in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, Facebook’s newest business office will be headed by Ogilvy veteran, Nunu Ntshingila, the company’s new Head of Africa.

Facebook is already an important part of how people and business connect in Africa. This office will support the significant growth in businesses and people using Facebook — Facebook’s active user population in Africa has grown 20% to 120 million in June 2015 from 100 million in September 2014. More than 80% of these people access Facebook from their mobile phones.

“We are inspired by the incredible ways people and businesses in Africa use Facebook to connect. This momentum in Africa comes on top of strong advertiser partnerships and excellent adoption of our products across all regions. In Q1 2015, 52% of our total ad revenue came from outside the US and Canada. But we’re just getting started,” says Nicola Mendelsohn, VP, EMEA, Facebook.

“Mobile is not a trend; it’s the fastest development in communications we’ve ever seen. This couldn’t be more true in Africa – where so many people are mobile-only. This new office is a significant milestone for Facebook and our teams want to partner with businesses across the continent,” Mendelsohn adds.

Integrat positions for growth as Intarget

Leading mobile services aggregator Integrat is now InTarget after completing a rebranding exercise that will see it better positioned to explore opportunities as a diversified mobile advertising and related solutions provider.

As one of South Africa’s most established WASPs (Wireless Application Service Providers) with a 15-year pedigree, Integrat provided mobile aggregation, premium SMS, mobile billing and bulk SMS services across the African continent. It last year launched InTarget after securing mobile advertising tenders from MTN and Airtel which called for the commercialisation of mobile advertising platforms in 32 African countries and Iran.

After successfully completing the first 10 mobile advertising integrations as InTarget, it became clear to Integrat’s leadership that the future growth of WASPs would be tied to their ability to exploit mobile advertising opportunities in South Africa and beyond.

“Collapsing the decade-and-a-half Integrat brand into the new InTarget entity and staying true to a diversification strategy will ensure our continued exponential growth,” said InTarget CEO, Mike Laws. He added that Integrat survived the turbulent times that continue to present challenges for WASPs by pursuing the diversification strategy that this week has seen the Integrat brand retired.
