This week’s BIG move: MemeJobs ramps up operations

MemeJobs, a job site that serves the digital and startup community in South Africa, has ramped up its operations to meet growing demand from a growing digital industry.

For the past three years, MemeJobs has established itself a quality, niche source for high calibre digital job positions and candidates within the digital space, and has proven a useful resource for a number of digital advertising agencies, digital media, start-up and telecoms companies in South Africa. The site tends to attract more entrepreneurial job candidates that are vested in their work and who don’t “care about 9-5”.

Cindy Cundell, previously with Mail & Guardian and BizCommunity, has joined the Burn Media team as head of jobs to further grow the site, with a strong social strategy, and a few more innovations on the cards. We will be putting more emphasis on a social recruitment strategy, using channels such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook,” says Cundell, “to better find, and engage with top talent.”

MemeJobs has announced that it will be focusing more on customer service and expanding its current offering. It also has hinted towards a rebranding and a ‘Courses and Education’ section.

Burn Media commercial manager, Kyle Hauptfleisch says that online job recruitment these days is not about quantity, but about quality. “In this age of information overload, with so many platforms competing for our attention — companies don’t want to sift through hundreds of CVs of unsuitable or average candidates. Companies want a smaller, but focused and targeted, selection of CVs. This is what MemeJobs delivers,” says Hauptfleisch.

Who’s moved where

DMMA includes brands in the digital mix

The Digital Media and Marketing Association (DMMA) is adding a brand portfolio to its current member base, which up until now has consisted predominantly of agency and publisher members. Anchor members of this new portfolio include Woolworths, Nedbank, Private Property, OLX and Renault.

Musa Kalenga, head of group digital marketing at Nedbank, has been appointed Head of the DMMA’s brand portfolio. A ‘brand’ refers to a business that is neither a publisher nor creative agency, with a local digital presence.

“This new portfolio will support brands to benefit from digital marketing by indentifying areas of growth and improvement. We want to get brands, publishers and agencies into one conversation and drive one digital agenda,” Kalenga says.

“By establishing a dedicated brands portfolio, we now have full representation of the South African digital ecosystem and can offer added value to our complete member base,” says Jarred Cinman, chair of the DMMA.

Who’s won what

marcusbrewster appointed to Magnum Pink and Black

Integrated communications agency marcusbrewster has been appointed to handle PR duties for the launch of two new Magnum ice-cream flavours, Pink Pomegranate and Black Espresso.  Working with Unilever-appointed advertising agency, The Hardy Boys, and in conjunction with digital agency Liquorice, the PR campaign will commence with a media launch at the end of October.

According to Dave Slater, Business Unit Director at The Hardy Boys, Magnum’s new flavour variants are positioned to reflect two personality facets.  Pink demonstrates one’s playful and flirtatious side while Black symbolises the sophisticated and elegant side.
