MORE ABOUT THE MAST FARM INN • The Mast Farm Inn is situated in Valle Crucis, North Carolina. Valle Crucis is pronounced Valley-Crew-Sis and in Latin means Valley Of The Cross, so named for the rivers and streams which cross our valley. We are on the Watauga River in a beautiful mountain valley a little under a mile long, by about a quarter mile wide, surrounded by mountains, forests, rivers and streams, and our population is eight hundred. Our location, history, geography, climate, and authentically friendly people, all contribute to making it quite simply a treasure… a natural sanctuary & haven of peaceful calm. It is a great place to live, and a great place to spend a few precious days.

Apple Hill Farm • Apple Hill Farm started in 2002 with 2 pregnant female alpacas and one young male alpaca. We are now home alpacas, angora goats, llamas, horses, donkeys, ponies, chickens, dogs, cats and Mr. Pickles the mini pig! We are still a working alpaca farm, but we have opened our gates to the public and are now focusing on agritourism as our main focus. Our passion is creating an environment where our guests can develop a new and deeper connection with animals and the beautiful mountain we call home. Every animal on the farm and every crop in the garden is grown and maintained with a specific purpose. Everyone has an important role at Apple Hill Farm – you included! We offer walking tours of the farm year round for individuals, families, and groups.

The Orchard at Altapass • Perched on the crest of the Blue Ridge atop the Eastern Continental Divide, the Orchard occupies a unique spot in both America’s landscape and history. Geography has been a key to the Orchard’s story on both counts. Occupying a commanding location above two important watersheds – the North Toe River, which eventually reaches the Gulf of Mexico, and the North Fork of the Catwaba, which finds its way to the Atlantic – the Orchard has been a vital travel route since our continent’s earliest settlers began exploring these mountains. Buffalo and elk traversed here, followed by the Cherokee Indians and eventually European settlers.
MORE ABOUT THE ORCHARD AT ALTAPASS • The arrival of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the 1930s was yet another key chapter in the Orchard’s history dictated by geography. The route following the ancient buffalo trails promised a tourism boom, but it also split the Orchard in half, sparking a bitter court fight that eventually reached the NC Supreme Court. The road builders won the battle and the Orchard lost its momentum as an agricultural enterprise. Local residents despaired as its prosperity and jobs waned. Many feared the land’s spectacular views would fall prey to real estate developers, but the current owners forestalled that by purchasing the property in the 1990s. Grandfather Mountain Wildlife Habitat •Take a walk on Grandfather Mountain, and you’re likely to spot squirrels, songbirds and other forest animals. But what about the more elusive wildlife? It only takes a visit to our seven environmental habitats to see cougars, white-tailed deer, black bears, bald eagles and river otters. Observing these animals up close in their native settings, it’s easy to imagine what it would be like to come face-to-face in the wild.
MORE ABOUT GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN WILDLIFE HABITAT • Environmental habitats are large enclosures that allow visitors to see animals in natural settings. Unlike the exhibits found in city zoos that bring in plants and boulders to recreate an appropriate setting, these enclosures were built around the animals’ actual native habitat. Viewing areas give visitors an up-close perspective of the animals as they live in the wild. Separated from the animals by moats or elevated above the habitats on large retaining walls, these viewing areas allow you to stand only a few feet away from animals you probably wouldn’t see in your everyday life.
