We’re well and truly in the throes of another of Mercury’s retrograde – or backward movement over the path this planet just travelled. As such, it’s a period of time where we’re likely to see our plans and communications from the past few weeks (or months) also backpedal, as Mercury is the ruler of communication. What was set may become unset.

This particular retrograde occurs through Aquarius, so depending on where Aquarius sits in your personal astrological chart (a site like this should be able to help you) you may also feel these themes come up for review in your personal circumstances too.

This astrological event happens three to four times a year, leaving many people pulling their hair out – yet, pre-warned is pre-armed. I’ve learnt to welcome this time, putting it to good use.  As with most challenges, it’s what we do with it that counts.

What Mercury is here to teach us

Mercury’s dance highlights where we have been blind or ignorant to issues in our life, presenting us with an opportunity to face them again (sometimes powerfully and confrontingly head on). As discussed in this article, Mercury’s retrograde is fertile time to review, rethink and rework what comes up for us during the phase.

In particular, Mercury draws attention to where we have previous ignored our intuition and inner guidance, when we’ve allowed assumptions and blind faith to steer us, rather than a deliberately considered, soulful approach. What you’ve ignored, Mercury unearths.

The best tools to survive and maximize Mercury Retrograde

So, to put this powerful influence to good use, I suggest using one or more of the following techniques (which of course we recommend at the best of times too):

Meditation – this helps drop the attachments to the confusion and frustrations, but also helps turn you inward for guidance and intuition. A powerful combination would be one the Letting Go and Meet Your Spirit Guide.

Journaling – specifically inquiring into the topics, issues and issues arising under Mercury’s retrograde can help you understand what you were previously blind to, and present a new path forward. What are you experiencing or reviewing? What limits or blocks you here (physically, mentally, emotionally and energetically)? How can you come to see this differently so you can now choose differently.

Seek further guidance – with automatic writing or pulling oracle cards. If you aren’t sure why you’re reviewing these lessons or topics, simply ask for guidance from your Spiritual Support Team to help fill in the gaps.

Let go – under Mercury’s influence we are supported to break free from what is no longer working. Our new A Guide To Letting Go eBook provides loads of tools to work through physically, mentally, emotionally and energetically to free you from past limitations and create new vibrations for moving forward.

Key dates for Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius

At the time of writing, we are in the thick of Mercury’s intensified retrograde, but below will help you make sense of what’s been happening in the past few weeks.

Pre-shadow was from 5 to 20 Jan – communications and plans would have slowed down, and anything explored at this time is likely to come unstuck in the next phase.

Mercury stations 21 Jan – the planet comes to a grinding halt, so too will your plans, communications etc.

Mercury Retrograde 22 Jan to 11 Feb – this is for the grunt work of reviewing, releasing and rethinking what comes next. Meditate, journal, reflect, clear out physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Mercury direct stations 12 Feb – Mercury stops his forward motion, preparing to again move forward, albeit slowly.

Mercury post shadow 13 to 4 Feb – Mercury begins to move forward, but slowly. You may begin to put your new plans and practices in place, but it is still shaky ground until the complete end of the post-shadow phase.
