Last Christmas my Goddaughter Willow kept telling me that an elf kept visiting her on a morning and he was in a different place everyday. I thought it was her imagination, but when I went down to see her (she lives down my street), there on top of the blinds was a little elf peeking out. The cutest little elf I ever saw, dressed all festive in red and white with a cute little face. This, was Elf on the Shelf and Willow couldn’t wait to tell me all about him.

Elf on the Shelf is a new Christmas tradition, one with a beautiful story, but one that can also work wonders for when children aren’t being all that sweet during December – therefore good for parents! In the US alone, there have been more than 8 million copies sold in the last ten years, and I am so glad it has become popular in the UK.

The Elf on the Shelf is a magical story that explains how Santa’s scout elves help him manage his naughty or nice lists and each illustrated, hardback book comes as part of a beautiful box set that also includes one of Santa’s out elves, whose job it is to watch children during the day and report to Santa every night. When a family adopts a scout elf and gives it a name, the scout elf receives its Christmas magic and can fly to the North Pole each night to tell Santa Claus about all of the day’s adventures. Each morning the scout elf returns to its family and perches in a different place to watch the festive fun, creating a unique family moment. Willow used to love telling me where on earth she had found her elf each morning.

The fabulous box set is certainly something to keep, and includes a glossy hardback book telling the fairytale story of Elf on the Shelf, which I love to sit and read with Willow, it gets me into that cosy, warm, festive mood. On the other side of the box sits Elf on a Shelf and it gives you the website to log on and register your elf’s name.

I try and spend as much time as possible with Willow and so the next time she comes for tea, and we have our Christmas decorations up, I am going to tell her that the Elf has come to keep an eye on her at my house too and I am going to let her name him and we can go online and register him together and then snuggle down and read the story. My friend Sarah has three gorgeous girls and so there are three scout elves in their house, and she comes up with some amazing hiding places for the elves, so I have included a few pictures but you can follow her on Instagram – username @sjconno82_sw

Elf on the Shelf costs £27.95 and comes in a boy and girl version, as well as both with darker skin and is available online here.
