Mobile technology has made its way into many departments of Fortune 500 Firms, however there is one area where the “big boys” are lagging behind … and their sluggishness can give you a competitive edge when it comes to recruiting top talent.

According to research by Merkle / RKG, nearly half of Fortune 500 websites are NOT mobile-friendly; and many of the companies that are, don’t follow Google’s “mobile-friendly” recommendations. From a Human Resources perspective, this has opened the door for smaller, mobile savvy organizations to connect with high-calibre candidates searching for new employment.

There’s no doubt that mobile usage is on the rise. According to Pew Research Center, 64% of American adults own a Smartphone and close to 50% own a Tablet. But would it surprise you to know that 43% of job seekers have used their mobile device to search for jobs?

A recent survey conducted by Jobvite reported that 37% of the Millennial demographic (born 1980 to 2000 or there about) expect mobile-friendly career sites; and 27 percent expect the ability to apply for jobs online. Many skilled and sought after Millennials expect the job hunt to be accessible end-to-end from their mobile devices.

Going mobile certainly has many advantages. Even the way that Google ranks websites now includes a mobile algorithm. Yet, surprisingly, 95% of Fortune 500 companies don’t yet offer this functionality.

The trouble is, traditional websites are not designed for quick mobile uploading and certain file types, software and technology tools are simply not compatible on mobile platforms. Most mobile users wait 5 to 10 seconds before abandoning a site. In other words, job seekers want businesses to make it easy to search and apply for jobs any time of the day from wherever they are. Companies that don’t make the application process simple risk alienating, frustrating and deterring a high number of highly sought after job prospects.

And, although the growing consensus with mobile recruiting is to go “all the way”, here are a couple of options for businesses that are not ready to embrace mobile technology on their own.

Develop a Mobile Career Site: A mobile career site gives job seekers the ability to opt into your talent pool and stay up-to-date on new opportunities from wherever they are. It can be linked to Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn to provide a seamless, brand experience that instills confidence and trust.
