With wet and wild water parks, hands-on cultural centers, wildlife zoos and more, there's no shortage of entertaining family-friendly activities in Phoenix:

Museums and Cultural Centers

Children’s Museum of Phoenix

This museum is a great option for children as young as infants and as old as 10. The historic Monroe School Building is home to more than 300 play experiences where kids are encouraged to touch everything and explore their imagination. Children can explore the many different exhibits, including the Art Studio, Book Loft, Building Big, Texture Cafe and Noodle Forest.

Tip: The first Friday every month from 5:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m., the museum is open to the public free of charge. The museum will be adding additional hours on Mondays for the months of June and July.

Musical Instrument Museum

This one-of-its-kind interactive museum is a hit with kids and adults alike. Guests can play instruments from around the world; learn how they are made and how they are played. You can even see instruments from music icons like John Lennon, Taylor Swift and Elvis Presley in the Artist Gallery.

Tip: MIMkids programs are offered every week for $12. Mini Music Makers is geared for children up to five years old and offers a place where parents and kids can sing, dance, and play instruments all while developing their motor, pre-language and musical skills. Their Musical Adventures Series is for kids 6-10 years of age where they will discover new cultures with music making and creating instruments.

Musical Instrument Museum

Phoenix Art Museum
The Phoenix Art Museum has more than 17,000 works of art from across the world. Kids get to enjoy the PhxArtKids Gallery, where they can participate in hands-on and brains-on activities.

Tip: Free admission is offered on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. - 9 p.m. and on First Fridays from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. Fees may apply to special exhibitions.

Heard Museum 

The Heard Museum is the ideal place to experience the many cultures and art of American Indians of the Southwest. Hands-on activities engage visitors of all ages with weaving, creating your own wearable art and Apache burden baskets.

Tip: Free Summer Sundays at the Heard are offered for the month of July, which includes free admission. Kids and adults can enjoy hands-on activities, a scavenger hunt, and ice cream, with varying themes each week.

Challenger Space Center Arizona

This unique facility was actually designed by 5th graders when asked what they would like to see in a space center. It features various meteorite exhibits, a space shuttle landing gear tire, Atlantis Space Shuttle model, Columbia Shuttle memorial display, Iridium Satellite model and Lowell Observatory display.

Tip: On select Saturdays, Challenger Space Center hosts Family STAR Nights, an entertaining and interactive astronomy night that is fun for the whole family. Cost is $7 per person, free for kids 3 and under.

Arizona Science Center

Guests of every age will be educated, inspired, and entertained by the wonderful world of science. The Arizona Science Center has more than 300 hands-on exhibits, a five-story IMAX Theater and a state-of-the-art Dorrance Planetarium that will take you ‘to-the-moon and beyond’ with its presentations. Among its permanent exhibits, the Arizona Science Center features special exhibits that vary every few months, giving its guests a unique experience every time they visit.

Tip: From May 31 -September 1, Lost Egypt will be the featured exhibit for the center. It will explore the science behind uncovering and understanding the ancient civilization of Egypt.

Arizona Science Center

i.d.e.a. Museum

Children are given opportunities to engage their senses and are encouraged to be creative while at the i.d.e.a. Museum. The three main exhibit areas, the Blacklight Room, the HUB, and Whiteman Family Exhibition Gallery, allow kids to explore their imagination through design, science and technology. Artville is a town for kids up to four years old that offers a train, soft sculptures, Legos and light boxes with cubes, and puppets in the Performing Arts Center.

Tip: The i.d.e.a. Museum offers free admission on the first Sunday of every month from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Pioneer Living History Museum

Be taken back in time as you visit the Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum. This  1800s town is spread across 90 acres, featuring authentic buildings and historically-accurate reproductions. Step inside a blacksmith shop, a sheriff’s office and jail, and a 1890s dress shop, all while costumed cowboys, lawmen and Victorian ladies greet you throughout your visit.

Arizona Museum of Natural History

Explore Arizona and the Southwest from the creation of the earth 4.5 billion years ago to now. See some of the biggest dinosaurs that ever lived in Dinosaur Hall and see them in their natural habitat on Dinosaur Mountain. Kids can pan for gold in the History Courtyard or experience a real territorial jail.

Hall of Flame Fire Museum

This is the place to take aspiring lil' firefighters. See over 90 fully restored pieces of fire apparatus, dating from 1725-1969. The Hall of Flame Museum has over an acre of fire history exhibits with pieces from America, France, Austria, Germany, and Japan. The museum is also home to the Hall of Heroes to honor those who have fallen.

Hall of Flame Fire Museum

Great Arizona Puppet Theater

Puppet shows are put on year round and vary every few months. This summer watch The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Monkey and The Pirate, and My Pet Dinosaur.

Tips: The Theater offers workshops on select Saturdays where kids can create their own puppet to take home.

Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeology Park

Located on a 1,500 year old archaeological site, the Pueblo Grande Museum is the largest preserved site within Phoenix. A trail takes guests through the prehistoric Hohokam village that features an excavated platform mound, ballcourt, and replicated prehistoric houses. Children are able to participate in hands-on activities where they can learn about the science of archaeology.

Tip: Archaeology for Kids Summer Camp and Art-e-ology Summer Camp is offered all summer. Kids can learn about the life of an archaeological artifact, how to identify artifacts in the field, and the science behind caring for artifacts.

Zoos and Wildlife Parks

Phoenix Zoo

The Phoenix Zoo offers families the opportunity to see wild animals up close and personal. Watch as Sumatran tigers roam the savanna; feed towering giraffes at the giraffe encounter; witness Asian elephants play in a watering hole. The zoo also features a monkey village, safari train and stingray bay. Kids can even splash around in the Yakulla Caverns or Leapin’ Lagoon from March-October.

Tip: Admission is only $10 on Tuesdays from May to August.

Phoenix Zoo

Out of Africa Wildlife Park

Experience Africa in the heart of Arizona. Out of Africa will bring you and your family priceless memories with their array of animal experiences. Tiger Splash gives you the chance to see Bengal and Siberian tigers interact in a predator-and-play relationship, romping and splashing in a large pool. The Giant Snake Show teaches kids about various giant snakes and guests can even touch and hold some of the largest species. Hitch a ride on the African Bush Safari Tour to get an inside look at the animals and their habitat with a 40-minute narrated tour.

Tip: Family Campout at Out of Africa takes place from May 31-June 1. The campout offers families the opportunity to get away from the city lights and to wake up to the sounds of roaring lions and the smell of hot breakfast. $79.95 for adults, $49.95 for ages 3-12. Space is limited.

SEA LIFE Arizona

At SEA LIFE Arizona you will be transported into the wondrous ocean world. Guests can interact with creatures at the touch pools and encounter over 5,000 sea creatures, including sharks, rays, seahorses and tropical fish. There is even a 360-degree ocean tunnel that will give you an experience unlike any other in the desert.

SEA LIFE Arizona

Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium 

Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium is now home to a new 15-acre safari park with more than 32 species. Guests can also visit a diverse water life in the aquarium or the 600 species that call the zoo home. If cute and cuddly is your thing, make sure to stop by the Baby Animal Nursery to see which species is currently staying there. Enjoy the view from high atop the media skyride, which takes you on a 15-minute ride around the park.

Tip: Kids can feed axis deer, baby goats, chickens and more for only 50 cents for pellets.

Wet ‘n’ Wild

As one of the most well-known and largest water parks in Arizona, Wet ‘n’ Wild features over 30 water slides and attractions. It is home to the Maximum Velocity, the first and only ride of its kind in the world. This coaster allows guests to race in tandem tubes down two slide tracks, with over 830 feet of drops and curves. There are plenty of attractions for the younger kids, as well. Went ‘n’ Wild Jr. is a kid sized water park that was made especially for kids and their families. Kids can play with water toys; enjoy spray zones, and various water attractions like the Tiny Typhoon.

Tips: The water park can easily reach capacity during the summer. Make sure you arrive early to beat the afternoon rush.

Wet 'n' Wild

Golfland Sunsplash

In addition to the many attractions at Golfland, Sunsplash has so much to offer families and kids of all ages. The water park features a wavepool, a lazy river, rock slides, a toddler play pool, and seven thrilling attractions. The most recent addition to the park is The Revolution, a seven-story ride that will catapult its riders into an open bowl. When you are done soaking up the rays and getting soaked, head to Golfland to enjoy bumper boats, laser tag, miniature golf, and choose from over 200 games at the arcade.

Tip: Sunsplash offers Night Splash hours on select days. The park remains open until 11 p.m. for everyone to enjoy attractions at night.

Arizona Grand Resort Oasis Water Park

This seven-acre water park was voted by the Travel Channel as one of the country’s Top 10 Water Parks. It features an eight-story tower with three slides, a wave pool, lazy river, 25-person hot tub, Wild Cat Springs for kids and private cabanas for relaxing and enjoying drinks and snacks from the Oasis Bar and Grill. The Oasis Water Park is reserved for resort guests only.

Tip: The Oasis Water Park offers families feature-length dive-in movies during the weekend evenings.

Big Surf

Waikiki Beach Wave Pool is ranked the third largest in the country, holding more than 2.5 million gallons of water. Guests can rent rafts, surf boards or boogie boards and enjoy waves that are produced every three minutes. Big Surf features seven slides and a Kool Kids Zone that has a climbing area and slides for kids 48 inches and under.

Tip: Kids can participate in boogie board and surfing sessions that will be taking place all summer for a small fee.

FlowRider at the Westin Kierland

Surf's up! The Westin Kierland brings the ocean to the desert with the FlowRider boardsport simulator. Kids and adults alike can get instruction and take to the waves.

Surge Splash Pad at The Phoenician

The Phoenician Resort had added to their already fantastic pools with the new Surge Splash Pad. Kids can spray each other with water cannons, stay cool while buckets of water are poured on them, and playful turtles mist them.

Enchanted Island Amusement Park at Encanto Park

Named as one of the Top 12 Best City Parks in America by Forbes, Encanto Park offers families nine rides and a variety of popular attractions geared towards kids aged one to ten. Guests can enjoy the historic Encanto carousel, bumper boats, splash zone, kiddie cars, pedal boats, and mini-coaster. Enchanted Island also has the C.P. Huntington Train, which takes its guests on a seven-minute tour of the island.

Tip: Friday nights starting at 5 p.m., unlimited ride wristbands for children or adults are only $6.50.

Goldfield Ghost Town

Take a trip back into the 1800s when gold mining and gun fighting was the norm. Goldfield Ghost Town is Phoenix’s only authentic ghost town that offers guests the chance to learn about the past and enjoy some great entertainment. Witness an Old West gun fight performed by the Goldfield Gunfighters,pan for gold, and take a ride on Arizona’s only narrow gauge train. You can even take an underground guided tour through the mines or a jeep tour across the scenic Apache Trail.

Goldfield Ghost Town

Rawhide Western Town and Steakhouse

Kids and adults will both get the true Western experience with a petting zoo, a tour through the Sonoran Desert trails by stagecoach, gold panning, and riding a mechanical bull. One of the best features at Rawhide is the Six Gun Theater and The Arizona Roughriders. Watch as Wild West stuntmen take daring falls and duel it out in gunfights and dodge explosions. Rawhide’s steakhouse has a menu that celebrates the spirit and hospitality of its Western roots through true cowboy portions.

Desert Botanical Garden

The Desert Botanical Garden has the world’s largest collection of desert plants, more than 50,000 species to be exact. The desert plants are on display throughout five thematic trails that demonstrate conservation, desert wildflowers, desert living, and the people and plants of the Sonoran Desert. Guests can also enjoy the exhibitions on display and shows that vary every few months.

Butterfly Wonderland

Step into a magnificent rain forest environment where thousands of butterflies from around the world fly freely. Guests start their experience in the 3D theater, where you are taken on a journey through the migration cycle of the monarch butterfly. See nature’s most amazing transformation unfold before your eyes as real butterflies go through metamorphosis in the Butterfly Emergence Gallery. Families can stroll through the 10,000-square-foot atrium, as butterflies flutter about and take rest upon your shoulder.

Tip: The Butterfly Wonderland also offers a mirror maze and laser maze to challenge your mind and body. Charges apply per maze.

Butterfly Wonderland

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

Located in the heart of Scottsdale, this unique park offers a variety of activities for people of all ages. Guests can take a ride on Paradise and Pacific Railroad where they will be taken around the park on a one mile track. Kids will be delighted as they ride the beautifully carved and restored Scottsdale Charro Carousel, with 30 horses and two wheelchair chariots. Throughout the park there are several exhibits that display railroad engines, a baggage car from 1914, a machine shop, and the 10,000-square-foot Model Railroad Building that showcases displays and artifacts.

Tip: Let the kids run wild on the park's two playgrounds with ladders, slides, towers and swings.

CrackerJax Family Fun and Sports Park

This fun-filled park offers families many different activities to enjoy. Guests can compete in laser tag, bumper boats, volleyball tournaments, miniature golf, and batting cages. Kids can battle it out in Water Wars, fly to new heights in the Bungy Dome, or race to the finish line at the CrackerJax Speedway for older kids and the Jax Trax for the little ones.
