One of the most stressful days we’ve had in the last hand full of years was when we took a stand for clients in a non-profit rehabilitation ministry. We deeply believed that God wanted us to stand up for those who confessed they had been taken advantage of by staff members. In an ever increasing culture of placing virginity on the altar and silencing women in the church, we witnessed enough on our own to step in and say something. This came just a few months after leaving our former
church
cult. Any time we stood up to a leader, as a voice for God and his people, we were shot down like an unarmed black man in Los Angeles.

The blood curdling scream I let out when my husband told me our former
pastor
dictator showed up at the ministry and ‘advised’ my husband to just walk away still raises flutters in my chest. There are some things you just cannot say in a religious environment without a witch hunt and being burned at the stake. I know I’m not the only one who has experienced similar backlash so here’s my recommendation for essential oils to help free you from religion…and boost your sex life!

1. Shades of Grey (Sinner or saint? Make up your mind):  Is it ironic that the main character’s first name is the very term used by the religious critics who shame the story? You don’t have to watch the movie or read the book to know there’s a sex plot at play. While Christian Grey struggles with his identity and understanding of love, so also did I while steeped in a cult. Trying to make sense of an angry God and a forgiving God was too much confusion for this woman. I needed clarity. Am I a sinner or a saint?

Marjoram essential oil reminds me that I am loved as I am by the Great I AM. Deeply breathing in this essential oil places me in a serene state so I can clearly see, know, and accept that I am love. I love God, live my life the best I can, and I want to have an incredible sex life! Why is it so wrong for a woman to want that?

2. Speak your mind (silence in the church?): For far too long I sat in silence, thinking it was good of me to remain silent.

“And since your history of silence

Won’t do you any good,

Did you think it would?

Let your words be anything but empty

Why don’t you tell them the truth?” ~Sara Bareilles

Sara’s lyrics speak loudly to me and she’s right! When did my silence do me any real good? Speaking confidently about what I was seeing, hearing, and experiencing was met with anger, for sure. However, I needed to let all the words fall out and let the chips fall where they may.

Myrrh (a resin used in the bible)  essential oil gives me the confidence I need to be authentically me. Myrrh gives me the confidence I need to let go of what I’m not and embrace who I am.

3&4. Vote Hilary..or Sarah Palin? (Women were barred from church leadership): Women in head leadership, in the traditional church, is unheard of. Women have been kept down, silenced, and even shamed by their male religious leaders for centuries. The patriarchy view often opens the door for abuse of women. While I’m not a democrat (I prefer to be Independent), I am open to the idea of a woman being at the helm of this nation’s ship, even if it’s not Hilary Clinton (umm yes, women! I’m talking to you, go run for office!).

My Fiercely Feminine essential oil blend (black pepper and roman chamomile) inspires the deepest places of my female soul as well as the gentle femininity of my exterior spirit. It reminds me that it’s permissible to tap into our anger and confidence in order to bring change, while resting in the graceful composure of a motherly touch.

5. Left Behind (America’s favorite End Times story): I used to be just like Chicken Little, running around proclaiming the sky is falling. Nicolas Cage is starring in the  remake of the popular Left Behind fantasy novel series by Tim LaHaye. Suggesting that The End Times is a theological trap for frightened people who worship the celebrity renditions of the Left Behind Series will most certainly free you from religion as they boot you out and slam the door.  I used to look up into the sky, with tears streaming down my face, begging the good Lord to come back and snatch us all out of this hell hole. Why, even Charles H. Spurgeon thought John Darby’s fringe belief (aka The Rapture theory) was poppycock!

“Distinctions have been drawn by certain exceedingly wise men (measured by their own estimate of themselves), between the people of God who lived before the coming of Christ, and those who lived afterwards. We have even heard it asserted that those who lived before the coming of Christ do not belong to the church of God! We never know what we shall hear next, and perhaps it is a mercy that these absurdities are revealed at one time, in order that we may be able to endure their stupidity without dying of amazement. ” ~Charles H. Spurgeon (source footnote 310)

Wild Orange: Then, the Spirit began revealing to me the abundance of this creation. This beautiful garden without boundaries, spanning to the furthers corners of the globe. I could suddenly see with hope, joy, and abundance. The world is not awful. There are some people doing awful things, but this earth is not wicked.

6. You Must Be High! (A lesson in herbal relaxation): In the last big election we saw some of our states legally permit the use of recreational marijuana and Christians have been debating it ever since. While I am not an advocate for pot, alcohol, or any other mind altering substance, I do favor freedom embraced by responsibility. I also embrace the need for relaxation. Thought pot isn’t just for relaxing at the end of a hard working day, cancer patients use it and now authorities are conducting another witch hunt for anyone using it in the form of a balm. I won’t get too deep into the debate for 6 foot high weeds growing in your yard, but I will stand up for using essential oils.

Vetiver essential oil: Vetiver essential oil can support relaxation of the mind and body as you breathe it’s aroma in deeply and slowly. It’s known to be an Antiseptic, Antispasmodic, Calming, Grounding, Immune Stimulant, Warming, Sedative to the nervous system, and Stimulating to the circulatory system. And it’s perfectly legal (unless you’re a tween in a public school).

7&8. Non Addictive Sleeping Aid: Sunday mornings often left me feeling exhausted and the afternoons were worse. Rarely a Sunday would go by that I could go without a nap. Even in the midst of the afternoon football games (and a living room of shouting fans), I could fall fast asleep. But God forbid it happen in church on Sunday. If you nodded off during  sermon, the preacher would pound his fist into the pulpit and he’d holler, “Ya ought not to sleep in church!” as everyone around you glared at you in fear that they would be next.

What I needed was Cedarwood and Lavender essential oils to blend with a carrier oil and apply to the bottom of my feet, all the night before, and sleep in! Which is exactly what I aim to do now with each and every Sunday. According to my calculations, I have about 13 (give or take) years left to make up for all the sleep I lost while sitting in church.

9. Coming out of the closet (Or enter your prayer closet): Most churches hold to the belief that rebelliousness is equal to witchcraft, so I guess I’m guilty. Though I don’t have green skin or warts (and most real witches don’t either), I confess I am rebellious. I’m rebellious against authoritarian males who control every aspect of a woman’s life. I’m rebellious against women being told to be seen and not heard. I’m rebellious against vain rituals with no meaning for the soul. Why on earth do religious folk want to keep people in their closets and rarely step into their own prayer closets? I would think God would prefer that we’re honest about who we are. Aren’t we encouraged to confess our truths? Honest with ourselves, with each other, and with him. So whether you’re coming out of your bedroom closet or your broom closet, this next oil is just  for you.

Bergamot, The Oil of Self Acceptance: This citrus essential oil can cause sun sensitivity, but can also strengthen our will to be courageous to our inner self. If people can’t accept you for who you truly are, and love you regardless, then be courageous and walk away from them.

10. Improve your Magic Spells (aka get your prayers answered): Magic has been mislabeled, falsely defined, and banned by Christians for centuries. They even used to murder women they suspected of witchcraft. But I guess as long as your god permits you to murder, you might get away with it (sarcasm, people…do NOT murder people in the name of your God or anyone else’s)! While Katy Perry is regularly accused of being a witch, so are a number of folks who question the ‘authority’ of the preacher and their pet doctrines. But the truth of the matter is, Christians try to practice magic all the time. Whatever form of prayer you use, you can improve the manifestations with this next essential oil.

Blue Tansy essential oil: This powerful oil supports our desires in achieving a manifestation of our highest good. It heightens personal mastery in what we put into the world so we can attain our fullest potential. Be sure to follow an ethical and responsible prayer philosophy to yield the best results.

11. Raising Hell (If you make your own hell, you lay in it): The topic of the Hell doctrine and the history surrounding it’s conception has caused quite a stir from the book Raising Hell by Julie Ferwerda to the movie Hellbound¿, people are all a buzz about this infamous doctrine and a war has ensued. It’s disappointing that so many people reject another person’s freedom to believe as their conscience guides when there are over 35,000 denominations in the world. Surely no one has the corner market, though some like to picket on every corner they can find. Whatever hell you believe in or experience, there’s plenty of oils to help support your faith in the good this life has to offer.

Angelica Essential Oil: With this one I’d like to quote directly from the book ‘Emotional Healing with Essential Oils’

“Angelica assists in healing a wide range of spiritual issues such as lack of faith, feeling spiritually manipulated or controlled by others, or feeling cut off from Divine love. It fosters a willingness to open the mind and see spirituality in a new light.” ~ Daniel Macdonald  Emotional Healing with Essential Oils, Manual I: Introduction (Kindle Locations 242-244). Enlighten. Kindle Edition.

12. Psychic Development (dabbling in the Pentecostal movement or New Age Community… oh wait): There’s a lot of criticism involved in the Word of Faith movement, often found in Pentecostal and Charismastic churches, but receiving a ‘word from the Lord’ CAN be quite accurate, almost psychic in nature. I, at once, was skeptical and disbelieving until I got some pretty darned accurate ‘tellings’ from a preacher. Often times I also felt some mystical messages coming through my prayer and meditation times only to see them confirmed in their manifestation. *Cue Twilight Zone theme song* Now I just call it Intuition.

Ylang Ylang essential oil, the oil of knowing: There’s something almost magical about how ylang ylang takes me back in time. The floral aroma seems to calm me in my meditation time so I can listen to my inward Spirit.

13. Sex Rituals (aka the Virginity Altar): Ya, I know right?!? How can sex rituals and virginity even be used in the same sentence? Because virginity and sex rituals have been a cultural norm for various cultures, regions, and religious beliefs that span the entire world history time line (or at lest during this century). But if you’re a woman, you absolutely, undeniably can NOT use the word virginity if you’re going to publish a Christian book.  Not only can you NOT use the word vagina, but you can’t find pleasure there either, not if you want to be viewed as a godly woman. Or can you?

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) essential oil: Oh my gosh, I have to tell you I was extremely cautious and skeptical about ever putting essential oils..down there.. you know..in the place that’s named a word I’m not allowed to say (because I have one…ssshh) This will be our little secret eh? Blending cinnamon essential oil with coconut oil yields some rather titillating results. I can only speak for the brand of essential oils I use,  because I haven’t experimented down there (at least not with other companies oils). 2 drops of cinnamon essential oil in 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil really surprised the heck out my husband. ok..um ya, the cat is out of the bag, I HAVE experimented down there, but only with cinnamon essential oil. I’ll get back to you after I try some others.

Now, more than ever, I can turn my husband on by simply diffusing cinnamon essential oil into the air.

Well, there ya have it folks. I broke free from religion and improved my sex life with 13 essential oils. I still believe in God, live an upright life (ok that might be questionable now), and improved my libido.

So here’s a recap on the essential oils mentioned above:

Vetiver
