I stayed up past my usual Sunday night bedtime of Please Tell Me the Sun Has At Least Set-thirty to watch the Emmys, and it made me realize I would pay a shitload of money to DirecTV if they would do an awards show version of NFL Red Zone. No stupid, forced and poorly timed banter between presenters. No long, drawn out speeches. Just the announcement of the winners, the reaction of the losers in case someone decides to toss decorum out the window and pull a Faith Hill, and the trip to the stage on the off-chance the steps listen to Sensei and play sweep the leg with someone as they go up for their award.
My total lack of attention span aside, there were some great moments during the broadcast.
Viola Davis broke a baffling 67 year dry spell, becoming the first black woman to win the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series category. Her display of sisterhood, thanking other women like Kerry Washington, Nicole Beharie and Halle Berry for helping to pave the way for her win may have made me cry like a bitch with a skinned knee. And don’t get me started on Taraji P. Henson‘s A++ cheerleader game. I already loved her, but the girl crush is in overdrive right now. Host Andy Samberg gave out the login information to a legit HBO Now account. Tracy Morgan made a a triumphant return to the Emmy stage after spending the last 15 months recovering from a horrific car crash that injured several and killed comedian James McNair. Jon Hamm skipped the stairs and literally rolled onstage to accept his Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award.
There were probably other moments I’m missing thanks to a combination of Monday morning and the distraction of being covered in baby snot. Complete list of winners is under the cut from CNN.
