Richard Hatch, the legendary actor who led the cast as Apollo in Battlestar Galactica has sadly died at the age of 71. Hatch was a screen veteran but was mostly known for his work in the original Battlestar Galactica TV series, and for playing Tom Zarek on the Syfy remake.

Hatch’s son Paul confirmed his father’s death, and released the following statement on Tuesday in Los Angeles: “He died peacefully with his family and friends at his side after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

“In spite of significant roles in other series and motion pictures over the following decades, his connection with the original Battlestar as well as the remake created an international following among science fiction fans. While continuing his acting career Richard was a popular figure at comic book conventions, science fiction forums and even hosted his own cruise ship events.”

Many friends and colleagues shared their thoughts following the news of his passing.
