We all know the frustration that accompanies having a shoddy internet connection. You’re in the middle of watching a YouTube video, or worse yet submitting an important document for work or school, and all of the sudden your page starts to buffer and the immediate feeling of stress kicks in.

A poor internet connection isn’t only a nuisance nowadays. With so many people relying on the internet for work, school and other responsibilities, it’s important to make sure you have the quickest, most secure connection possible. This is why I’m going to show you four simple tricks to improve the internet connection in your house.

4 Ways To Improve Internet Connection

Find The Best Spot For Your Router

Although routers may not be the most visually appealing aspect of your home, it is important to keep away from large furniture in the house, and should not be kept in cabinets or closets. Routers should be kept in wide, open spaces of the house, where there is a minimal amount of furniture to block its signal. They should also be kept in central areas of the house, to ensure that it provides maximum coverage to all corners of your home. Also make sure to point the antennas of the router perpendicularly (one vertically, one diagonally) and to place the router in an elevated position if possible. Some people find that putting the router in the center of their attic works well, and others even hang them on their walls or ceilings.

Make Sure Other Appliances Aren’t Interfering With Your Connection

Common appliances that can be found in every household are known to interfere with a router’s internet coverage. Cordless phones, microwaves, and other appliances that emit forms of radiation can all mess with your router’s signal, making it important for you to create as much distance between them as possible. Opt for corded phones, as any cordless devices send signals of their own that obstruct wireless networks. If you do not have any non-cordless alternatives, then just try and find a place in your house that is mostly void of cordless technology and set up your router there.

Find A Better Wireless Channel

Aside from radiation emitting appliances in your house, your neighbors routers can also be interfering with your internet connection. Wireless routers can operate on many different channels, and in order for you to get the best internet connection, you want yours on a channel with the least amount of traffic. You can use programs such as   WiFi Analyzer or CommView for WiFi to help you choose the optimal channel available to you.

Monitor/Control Your Bandwidth

If you’re living with other people in your house, and if they regularly use computer programs such as Skype, Netflix, online games or who frequently torrent files, then there is a good chance that they are hogging all of the bandwidth, making the internet slower for you and anyone else in the house.Luckily, you can use a mechanism called Quality of Service (QoS) which allows you to appropriately reduce the amount of bandwidth used by others. With QoS, you can prioritize which internet application get the most bandwidth, allowing you to have consistent internet connection while slowing down anybody who is going over their allotted amount.
