With its cool and refreshing flavor, peppermint has long been a favorite flavor for candies and beverages alike. Not only does it taste good, but peppermint has several health benefits.

There are several stomach disorders that can be eased by drinking peppermint tea:

Bloating

If you have a problem with bloating caused by gas — you may want to try drinking a cup of peppermint tea with your meal. The oils found in the plant’s leaves tend to relax the muscles of the digestive tract. This helps gas flow freely and quickly through the intestines, preventing it from backing up in the bowel.

Heartburn

Because of its relaxing effect on the stomach and intestines, peppermint tea can also relieve the symptoms of heartburn. Food moves out of your stomach more quickly, reducing the feelings of burning and excessive fullness.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Spasms

If you suffer from cramping and diarrhea associated with irritable bowel syndrome, you may want to try drinking peppermint tea to relieve your symptoms. The oils found in the tea can help calm intestinal spasms that cause discomfort.

A Word of Caution

While peppermint tea is generally considered safe to drink, there are several instances when caution should be taken before consuming it. If you are unsure, it is always a good idea to ask your doctor.

While peppermint tea has been shown to relieve heartburn, it should not be taken for heartburn associated with reflux disease. The tea could actually make symptoms worse.

Because peppermint increases the flow of bile from the liver, people with gallbladder problems should avoid ingesting it.

Certain medications can adversely interact with peppermint when taken at the same time. Generally, antacid medications should be taken two hours before or after drinking peppermint tea.

Studies have shown that peppermint tea could cause a diabetic’s blood sugar to drop too low. It is especially important to ask a doctor for advice if you are taking insulin or oral medications.

Peppermint tea can be a delicious, soothing way to relieve your upset stomach. Next time you are feeling uncomfortable after eating, try a cup and find out how this natural remedy can help you.
