It all started with a little music in homeschool.

I wanted to play something to liven up a math lesson because, in my house, math needs all the help it can get.  What was a little fun turned into an impromptu game of Freeze Dance!

The first cd my youngest son couldn’t get enough of was Whats in the Bible, The Songs.

“Hallelujah, look what God can do,” he would dance around the house. I just thought it was cute.

I didn’t realize my son was an auditory learner until I popped in Seeds Family Worship #6 and the boy sang “The Fruit” all day long. All. Day. Long. I was amazed, mostly because I had an older visual, tactile learner on my hands (pun intended). I hadn’t tried to teach an auditory learner before.

I quickly started hunting for more kid friendly cds especially classic stories to music!

I found that Maestro Classics does a great job of combining fantastic stories with enchanting music! We can listen to the symphony while completing hand writing exercises.

The boy’s favorite cd by far is Yancy, Jesus Music Box. There is something so heart warming about hearing a 6yr old belt out, “I’m not ashamed to say the name – Jesus”. It was such a thrill when Yancy came to our church and we enjoyed her concert!

Change up the day and include music from the time period  or geographic location you are studying.  Try to incorporate a meal or snack of that time period or location while you listen.  Try a new dance.  Music isn’t just for exercise – it offers great learning opportunities!

If you’re adding music in homeschool lessons, memorizing scripture, or listening to the classics, I encourage you to put a cd player in the room, set up a Pandora Station, and fill your house with some good music. (Because there is a lot of junk out there, and I encourage you to know what your kids are listening to.)  I can’t tell you how many times we’ve had a hard day and pumping worship music changed everyone’s attitude!
