café Roux, Noordhoek’s much-loved premier live music venue is now also coming to the city. café Roux Cape Town is situated in the prime location of Shortmarket Street and will open on Friday November 25th. café Roux has always had a strong music culture with its café Roux Sessions four or five nights a week, attracting an exciting and diverse line up, of SA’s most popular and talented up and coming artists.
As with Noordhoek, the food offering in Cape Town is simple and unpretentious. The menu will change regularly showcasing a select offering of handmade craft pizzas with fresh seasonal toppings. Think ripe fig and Gorgonzola in autumn; heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil and grilled aubergine in summer. Delicious vegan and gluten-free options will be available. For the not so hungry, cheese-and-charcuterie boards will also be on offer with marinated olives, garden greens and preserves.

Thursday 1 December: Doc MacLean

Son of a civil rights lawyer and a fiddle player, Doc MacLean was exposed to country blues and folklore at an early age. By his early teens he was performing in coffeehouses and festivals, and was appearing on radio and television variety shows. Answering the call of the road, Doc traded a guitar for a 1948 Dodge and set out to explore America. In a relentless cross country ramble, Doc MacLean sought out every living old time blues player he could find. Significantly, he met and became friends with artists such as Son House, Tampa Red, Sippi Wallace, Yank Rachel, Robert Pete Williams, Rev Robert Wilkins and Bukka White.
First known for his work as an accompanist on harmonica and washboard, Doc proceeded to make his own mark as a guitarist, singer, arranger and band leader. Performing on bottleneck and standard guitar, Doc MacLean now appears solo and with upright bass and percussion. While his lyrics are mainly contemporary, his approach as a guitarist-songster reflects not only his exposure to southern string bands and jug bands, but also to Delta players and storytellers such as Charlie Patton, Son House, and Sam Chatmon. He is currently on his South African tour and will be making a stop at café Roux, Noordhoek for a special show.

This solo show uses only harmonica, human beat-box and vocals, recording live loops and then layering and building those loops to construct a song… Although it’s a solo act it’s not your typical singer-song-whiner type show, expect more in your face dance-style grooves served up in a Deep-South style.

Born to Ayrshire Scots parents in Lusaka, Zambia, Robin Auld’s childhood was spent alternating between Southern Africa and Scotland, a journey reflected in the African and Celtic influences in his music. He learned to play the guitar by listening to Hendrix, Ry Cooder and Neil Young, also absorbing the influences from the indigenous guitarists of South Africa such as Philip Tabane, Tony Cox, Madala Kunene and Steve Newman. The beach and surfing were the main elements of his early years in Cape Town, which he moved to when he was 10 with his mother and brother. He started out playing as a sideman guitarist in various seminal Cape Town line-ups such as the Lancaster Band and Steve Walsh Roots Rhythm band before going on to write and sing his own songs. He had several national hits with the band Z-Astaire, produced by Kevin Shirley who went on to work with Joe Bonnamassa, Led Zeppelin and John Hiatt amongst others. He then embarked on the journey to take his music abroad, and it was in the UK that his music evolved from the pop sound of his earlier recordings to the contemporary mix of roots influences that make up his sound today.

Loki Rothman has been seen many times with acts like Jack Parow and Albert Frost on the Café Roux stage. For the first time he is hitting the stage with his own solo show at Café Roux. People can expect a show where the limits and possibilities of a acoustic are pushed. Oposite the Other – In January 2016, they self-released their first song ‘Ride Away’ and it organically made its way into the Spotify Global 50 Viral Chart, peaking at number 8 in the Global chart and notably making its way into the top 10 in the US and top 5 in both Australia and New Zealand. The track has also received International Radio play by stations within Germany and Canada. Their follow up single ‘Stutter Love” was released in March 2016. Hailing from Bloemfontein, Frank Freeman started his musical endeavours at the early age of 6, joining the first version of the Grey College Boere Orkes. During his 8 -year stint in the group the recorded a South African Traditional Music Award nominated album and toured the Czech Republic as South African representatives for an inter cultural event. After this he joined his first rock band, Colour Blind for whom he started writing. The group was nominated for 2 MK Awards for best newcomer and best campus hit for their debut single. In 2011, the year before his move to Cape Town, he did his first recordings and then performances as FRANK FREEMAN and has since released an online EP entitled ART BROKEN in 2014 after his first 4 singles before that. He is currently working on his debut album.

Watershed – structured around singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Craig Hinds who has always felt he is a man with a positive message to convey and after teaching high school for two years while playing his own material out in smaller venues Craig decided to take the opportunity to form a band and make his voice and songs heard across the world.
Watershed’s travels have led them to perform at the prestigious South by South West Music festival in Austin Texas and Canadian Music week to various dates across Europe where their music is particularly well received in Germany, Austria and Switzerland after a radio DJ on holiday in South Africa heard “Indigo Girl” and thought it would enchant his listeners. He was absolutely right. The play listing of the song on the local German station quickly built momentum and lead to them to be picked up by EMI Germany who released “In The Meantime” and every album & single since.
Working with various producer’s the band had the opportunity to hone all the facets that make up a great album and the result is their finest work to date.
