Located on the north end of Alexandria, Charles Barrett Elementary School was built in 1949. It is among the smallest of Alexandria’s school buildings,. A 1997 library/media center addition and renovation added space and a new fiber optic network.

Douglas MacArthur Elementary School (Grades K-5)

Douglas MacArthur Elementary School was built in 1943 by the federal government to accommodate the children of the Naval Torpedo Plant workers living in Chinquapin Village. Several major renovations to the building have taken place since that time, most recently in 2008. Douglas MacArthur is a Responsive Classroom School.

George Mason Elementary School in central Alexandria was built in 1939. It has had several major renovations since that time. In 2014 the school had an expansion which added an enlarged cafeteria, two courtyards and four new classrooms. George Mason has the latest technologies for every classroom.

Patrick Henry Elementary School is located in the west end of the city of Alexandria on 15 acres. Patrick Henry is on a fifteen acre location in a valley that was once woodlands. In 1995, eight additional classes were added to the original building and there is an Alexandria Recreation Department modern gymnasium adjoining the school.

James K. Polk Elementary School was built in 1965. It is located on the west side Alexandria on a 13 acre campus. It underwent a recent “green” renovation and is also one of the most state-of-the-art schools in the city.

With its opening in September 2000, Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School was the city’s first new school in 30 years. The 80,000-square-foot school in the Cameron Station development, offers dedicated teacher planning areas, extended learning areas for special student projects as well as a covered play area allows children to have recess even in inclement weather.
