Seattle based development team 17-BIT, creators of the the award winning Skulls of the Shogun, have been hard at work on their next project Galak-Z.

Inspired by 16-bit era space shooters and hyper colorful anime from the 70′s and 80′s, Galak-Z drops players in a physics-driven open-world action game.

Jake Kazdal, CEO of 17-BIT, explained that Newtonian physics take center stage as players experience finely tuned controls, blast enemies, unleash missile salvos, and toss enemies into explosive obstacles.

17-BIT held a presence at E3 earlier in the summer where they showed off an unfinished build of the game thus far. Clearly, the team has nailed the essence of the throwback style they are seeking to emulate. Modernized textures are a welcome addition – with so much action on screen at once, any less polish would have made the game feel murky and confusing.

In addition to a highly developed art and physics system, Galak-Z is also proud of its enemy AI. Dynamic enemies powered by the next generation “Cyntient AI” platform, created by Cyntient Inc. According to a press release, this new AI platform will allow enemies to think, react, and cooperate with one another like seasoned pilots.

Kazdal said that players can expect to see Galak-Z on the PS4, “Sony’s incredible support and outreach to indie devs for unique content, along with the ability to self publish, makes it our choice destination as an independent game studio,”

Gamers and expect Galak-Z to black into their consoles in 2014.
