Facebook-owned Instagram's active user base is growing at a record rate

Just 6 months after hitting Android, Instagram has crossed the 100 milllion active user mark. Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom announced the news in an official blog post written to commemorate the news on the official Instagram blog.

For those living in the stone ages, Instagram is a free photo sharing app for iOS and Android that lets users touch up and share photos with other followers. It is sort of like Twitter, but for photographs instead of status updates. Users can also share Instagram photos on Twitter and Facebook.

"Now more than ever, people are capturing the world in real-time using Instagram", Systrem wrote. "What we see is a world more connected and understood through photographs."

The blog post was extremely heartfelt and told the story of how Instagram was created and grew. Obviously all of the company's work paid off as they were fully acquired by Facebook earlier this year.

"Now, more than ever, people are capturing the world in real-time using Instagram—sharing images from the farthest corners of the globe," Systrom wrote. Obviously, we don’t know the full numbers, but we do know that Instagram has about 40 million Android users. The rest are likely iPhone users. It will be interesting to see how fast the Android numbers grow in the coming years.

Anyway, with Facebook now on board the Instagram train, the mobile photo sharing services might grow even more and possibly take on the likes of Twitter and other social networks. I can really see the company having over 200 million active users in just a few years time.

What do you think? Do you consider yourself an active user of Instagram?
