It used to be that having an HD monitor for your PC was good enough, but in the last year or so 4K monitors have become the latest must have setup. But just what is a 4K monitor? Most computer monitors nowadays are “full HD” meaning that they have at least 1920 vertical columns and 1080 horizontal rows of pixels.

4K monitors have four times that resolution at 3840 vertical columns and 2160 horizontal rows of pixels. This increased resolution means more pixels are crammed into the same display area, meaning you can fit more items on screen at once (like two browser windows side by side). Because the more pixels a screen has, the sharper images will appear, it’s best that monitors that support 4K are at least 27 inches or above.

But just what are some of the best 4K monitors available? In this article we picked five good choices based on price and specs, which we believe should fit almost everyone’s needs.

Asus PB287Q 28in Widescreen Ultra HD 4K Monitor

Price: around £388

Features: the Asus PB287Q  offers a 28-inch, 3840 x 2160 TN-based panel (TN panels are among the lower cost panels on the market) with a flicker-free backlight. The design won’t win any awards–it looks like your standard black-bodied monitor–but simple is good, especially for the relatively low sub-£400 price point. The monitor also supports DisplayPort 1.2 at 60Hz at 4K resolution.

LG 27UD68P 27in Ultra HD 4K Monitor

Price: around £399

Features: Going up just slightly in price and you can get the LG 27UD68P. Yes, it’s an inch smaller than the Asus, but it makes up for it in design, with the curved stand giving it a sexier look. The monitor itself has a respectable 1000:1 contrast ratio with a 300 nits brightness. It features two HDMI ports as well as a DisplayPort.

Dell P2715Q 27in Ultra HD 4K/5K LCD Monitor

Price: around £509

Features: If your budget can afford a little more, the Dell P2715Q is routinely considered one of the best 4K monitors on the market. Why? Because it's technically 5K with a resolution of 5,120 x 2,880 pixels. It’s praised for its incredible accurate color representation as well as its built-in Harman Kardon speakers. And priced midway between the other monitors on this list it’s probably the best bang for the buck.

BenQ BL3201PT 32in 4K UHD Designer Monitor

Price: around £689

Features: If you’re looking for a good 4K display at a larger size, the BenQ BL3201PT is a great choice. Coming in at 32 inches, the 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution looks beautiful. BenQ also says its advanced IPS technology provides graphics professionals “ultra-precise color rendition and over 300% working space to enhance their work efficiency and productivity.” Of course, this larger screen size and improved color accuracy will cost you. The average price of this monitor is almost £700. The monitor also features HDMI, DVI, and Display Ports as well as five USB 3.0 ports.

Samsung U32E850R 32in LED 4K Monitor

Price: around £859

Features: Physically the Samsung U32E850R is beautiful to look at. This 32 inch monster sports 8 million pixels at 3840 x 2160 resolution. Complete with picture-by-picture and picture-in-picture, the U32E850R will let you work and play at the same time. The display also expresses approximately 97% of sRGB color gamut for “almost exact reproduction of digital image colors on screen” posts Samsung. It also includes a DisplayPort 1.2 and two HDMI ports as well as four USB 3.0 ports.
