A guide to finding the best Navy blue area rugs that are stylish and inexpensive
Navy blue area rugs have been growing in popularity, and they seem be the 2nd most popular color in area rugs (gray is #1). While darker blues are very stylish (and go well with both dark and light floors), it’s often challenging to find a good navy area rug that is also reasonably priced. So, I’ve assembled a bunch of them for you to speed up the process.
Most of these area rugs are under $200 and you can purchase them directly from Amazon (by following the links/clicking on the pictures) and have them shipped directly to your door.
Before we get started, we’ll need to go over some guidelines for choosing the right size and shape for your navy area rug (and why area rugs are important). Then, we’ll discuss styles for your area rug and where you can buy them online.

Important: Don’t forget to get an area rug pad. Why? An area rug pad will:
Make your area rug feel softer (and warmer)
Help your rug last longer
Protect your hardwood floor from scratches (and spills) or protects carpet from bleeding
Secure the rug in place (so it’s less likely to slide)
I highly recommend Original Gorilla Grip felt padding. I’m sure you can find some that are cheaper, but you definitely get what you pay for as the others are thinner (i.e. don’t provide the cushioning) and can some can stick to your hardwood. This is not the place to skimp as it can impact the comfort and durability of your area rug as well as your hardwood.

Choosing the best size for your navy area rug
Larger rugs can make the room look larger…unless they are too big, in which case, they can have the opposite impact. Keep at least 18″ (1.5 ft) around the rug’s edges or perimeter of the room.
For smaller rooms, I generally recommend just 1 area rug (adding more can make the room look smaller and creates clutter and distraction – where should your eye focus? In very large rooms with multiple functions (e.g. a Great room), area rugs can help divide and classify areas of the room.
Most people start shopping for an area rug based on color and style. While this makes sense from a decor perspective, they are missing a step from a design perspective. You need to consider the size! The area rug should enhance and complement the space, not overwhelm it. Likewise, if the rug is too small, it will look puny and misplaced. We are going for goldilocks here.
So, before you go shopping for an area rug, measure! Measure the size of the room and the area where you are considering adding the area rug.
And, if you are having challenges visualizing the size and shape of the area rug (and you are not alone!), consider using paper or sheets on the floor. DO NOT USE TAPE. If you have hardwood floors and use tape, you will likely peel off the polyurethane finish.
Meet your new best friend – the tape measure. If you don’t already have one, you can buy an inexpensive one from Amazon. And, you may find that this inexpensive laser will come in handy, especially for measuring your whole room.
The Bosch GLM compact laser is easy to use. It’s measures up to 50 ft in length and has 1/8″ accuracy. It’s light and compact. I have one of these lasers. This works with 2 double A batteries which are included.
In terms of guidelines, I find it helpful to put this in the context of each room. Please also note that these are guidelines and area rugs come in many sizes – they may be off by a few inches on either dimension and that’s okay.
Living Room – choosing the best size area rug:
You’re going to find that there are different opinions out there. Some people recommend that the area rug should either be completely under the main furniture (i.e. couch, sofa, coffee table, chairs) or completely in front of the furniture and just underneath the coffee table. But, I would argue that there’s a 3rd option where the front legs of the larger couch can rest on the area rug. Choose whichever way you prefer (and I would recommend cutting out sheets of paper and placing on floor to help you visualize).
A 5 x 8 ft area rug will typically be placed in front of the couches. If you choose this option, make sure the area rug is at least as larger (or larger) than the length of the longest sofa. And, be sure the rest of the furniture is close to the area rug, so that the area doesn’t feel disconnected for conversations.
An 8 x 10 rug is usually large enough to give you flexibility on the furniture arrangement and will sometimes allow for all of the furniture to go on the rug, or else have the main sofa partially on the area rug. It will depend on the dimensions of the room and the furniture. A 9 x 12 area rug generally will have all of the furniture on top of the rug.
All things being equal, generally larger rugs will cost more (obviously). But, I would recommend that you start with the size that you prefer.
Dining Room – choosing the best size area rug:
The dining room is probably the most straight forward. The area rug should cover the table + chairs (including when the chairs are pulled out). You then want to make sure that have around 18″ of flooring around the perimeter of the room If you have a China cabinet, you’ll want the area rug to end before that so that it is full balanced on the flooring.
Bedroom – choosing the best size area rug:
For the bedrooms, there are generally 2 approaches: 1) do a smaller rug (e.g. 5 x 8) towards the bottom of the bed and orient this horizontally (see picture 1) or 2) do a larger area rug that is long enough and wide enough to cover all 3 sides of bed and generally extending just past the night stands. This second option is usually 9 x 12 or 8 x 10 (or 8 x 11). Sometimes this lays out better horizontally, but other times, vertically works better, pending on the dimensions of the room and size of bed/furniture.
If your bedroom is large enough, I usually prefer the 2nd option, both as it centers the room and allows for carpet underneath your feet for when you get out of bed in the morning (this is especially important in winter months in colder environments. But, for smaller rooms, the 1st option sometimes looks better. I’m not a fan of people who do 2 runners on the sides and larger area rug at the bottom of the bed. I think this looks cheap and cluttered (and it’s not as safe).
Choosing the best shape for your Navy area rug
Determine the best shape for area rug. Consider the shape of the room and the furniture. Generally round dining room tables look better with round area rugs, and oval tables work well with either oval or rectangular area rugs. Note: There’s a more limited selection in round and oval area rugs, and many tend to be more traditional in style.

Moroccan Trellis Navy Area Area Rugs
Moroccan Trellis has become so popular that I decided to give it its own subcategory. You can read more about the origins and history of the moroccan trellis here.
Diagona Designs Contemporary Moroccan Trellis in Navy and Ivory (5 x 7). This area rug is a double trellis (or a trellis within a trellis). It comes in many other colors and is avail in 5 x 7 or 8 x 10.
Navy Moroccan Trellis 5’2″ x 7’2″ This area rug is also a double trellis (or a trellis within a trellis). It comes in many other colors but currently the largest size available is 5 x 7.
Safavieh Amherst Collection Navy and Beige Area Rug. This is a traditional Moroccan Trellis and includes a border. It’s soft and luxurious.
Trellis Area Rug Contemporary Modern Lattice 7’10” x 9’10”. This is a traditional Moroccan Trellis. It doesn’t include a border. It comes in 5 colors.
Safavieh Hudson Shag Collection in Navy and Ivory 6 ft x 9 ft. This is a shag carpet with a Moroccan trellis design. It’s a little more like an infinity symbol vs a traditional quatrefoil. The pile height is 2 inches, so it’s thick and soft and easy for your feet to get comfy and lost in.
Navy Moroccan Trellis 7’10” x 10’6″. This is a variation on the moroccan trellis them with a combo of big and small quatrefoils. It’s soft and plush.
Modela Collection Trellis Modern Area Rug Navy Blue 7’9″ x 9’10”. Here’s another moroccan trellis area rug. It has a white border (so it may get a bit dirty around the edges so it probably wouldn’t be my first choice). It comes in other size as well as a runner.
Garland Rug Avery Area Rug 5 x 7.5 in Navy. This is navy with double white pin stripes. It’s also available in black/white.
Other transitional area rugs in Navy
Generations New Contemporary Panel and Diamonds Modern Area Rug 8’x 10’2″ in Beige, Navy, Coral, Blue and Grey. This is a very intriguing rug as it combines styles between traditional and contemporary (hence it’s transitional). It’s in panels (as many traditional rugs are) and yet it has subtle ties to quatrefoil or trellis shape. This navy area rug also incorporates more colors (all of them neutral) and the combo of this and the pattern helps hide dirt better. It also has multiple blues, so it’s more likely to pick up blues that you already have in the room and complement more accessories (e.g. pillows). It comes in 2 sizes and it’s a rather flat rug (making it less expensive). The edges are surged in gray.
Safavieh Montauk Handmade Flatweave Navy and Ivory Cotton Area Rug (5 x 7). If you love diamonds (as I do), this rug is for you – it’s diamonds within diamonds. This mimics the stylish look of sisal rugs, but unlike sisal which is hard and scratchy, it’s made from cotton so it’s softer and walkable. With this carpet, you will definitely want to Never curl edges (see below).
Safavieh Amherst Collection Navy and Beige Area Rug 6 x 9. Yes, the chevron pattern is hot. And, it’s easy to find complementary decor items such as throw pillows to go with this navy area rug. This is a soft cut carpet.
Diagona Designs Contemporary Strips Design – 8 x 10 in Navy, Beige and Teal. This is an abstract design with subtle stripes. If you like blues, check out both the navy and teal versions as they each have a combo of blues, but are slightly different in color. On Amazon, hover on the pattern so you can see it closer to see the colors better.
Safavieh Montauk Collection Handmade Flatweave Navy and Ivory Cotton Area Rug (6 ft x 9 ft). This is a bold striped cotton carpet. It’s a flat weave, so it’s easy to vacuum. It lays flat and you’ll definitely want an area rug pad both for cushion and slip resistance.
Nourison Caribbean Navy Rectangle Area Rug (7’10” x 10’6″). This is a looped navy blue area rug with white and light blue accents. The navy background is flecked for more visual intrigue (and this helps hide dirt, too). It’s also available in reverse (i.e. white background with navy and light blue accents).
Safavieh Hudson Shag Collection Navy and Area Rug 6 ft x 9ft. This is a navy and ivory shag area rug. It’s plush – 2 inches thick – so it’s soft on your feet. While shag for wall to wall carpet is completed dated, shag area rugs are very on trend as they create a strong texture contrast vs the hardwood below. Please note that this navy shag carpet is available in other colors and there is a solid navy version as well (see below).
Traditional area rug patterns in Navy
Home Dynamix Premium Polypropylene 7’8″ x 10’7″ Navy Area Rug. This is a traditional area rug complete with borders. This navy blue area rug has white, beige and light blue and the strong pattern will camouflage dirt well. It comes in many different colors too, and even has a size as large as 9’2″ x 12’5″. This is very low priced for a traditional style area rug.
Safavieh Evoke Collection Navy and Ivory Area Rug 8 x 10. This is a traditional styled area rug in navy. The navy is a bit lighter (closer to royal blue) than most navy area rugs. It’s available in some very large sizes, including 9 x 12 and 11 x 14. In addition, it’s available in a matching runner. It’s also available as a circle or square rug.
Nancy Industries Ourspace Bright Area Rug 8 x 10. This is a solid navy blue area rug. One of the great things about this area rug is that it’s available in very large sizes, including 9 x 12, 12 x 12, 12 x 15 and even 12 x 18. That’s very unusual and challenging to find online. It’s also available in kid colors, including pink, purple, orange and light blue.
Shaggy Collection Solid Color Shag Area Rugs. This solid navy blue area rug also comes in a variety of colors and sizes. This is a cut carpet with 1.5 ” pile height.
Tone on Tone area rugs in Navy
Garland Rug Charleston Area Rug 9 x 12 in Navy. This is a tone on tone navy blue area rug. Tone on tone refers to a style where part of the carpet is cut and part is looped making a pattern out of the same thread color. It adds more visual intrigue to a carpet without adding a 2nd color. While it’s a garland patterned carpet, it also has a dual effect showing diamonds.
Solid Navy Area Rugs
Safavieh Milan Shag Collection – Navy Area Rug (5 x 8) – This navy blue rug is super plush and soft. Your feet will just melt in and feel snug. It’s available in many sizes and several other colors. While shag wall to wall carpets are out, shag area rugs are in.

This solid navy area rug comes with a rubber backing (similar to what you’d find in bath mats), so it’s slip resistant and you don’t need an area rug pad. There are other color options as well. This area rug is stain and bacteria resistant so it can even be used in bathrooms. It has a low pile height, so it’s easy to vacuum.
And, don’t forget your area rug pad!. The area rug pad will add cushion, prevent scratching with your hardwood floors (or bleeding if you have carpet underneath). It will also prevent/reduce sliding and, it will help your area rug last longer. I strongly recommend Original Gorilla Grip felt padding.
Bonus: Try Never Curl to prevent your area rugs from curling.
Did you ever have the corners of your area rug curl up? It’s really annoying and create a tripping hazard. Well now thanks to this handy invention, you can solve this issue with these rubber corners which adhere to the bottom of the rug corners and prevents them from curling. And, they don’t scratch hardwood floors.
