With Honors

No fall (and therefore back-to-school contiguous) sweater roundup would be complete without mention of the varsity sweater, so we'll get this one out of the way first. Marc Jacobs and Alessandro Michele gave the preppy high-school staples serious makeovers for their Fall 2016 runways. Gucci's offering, pictured here, came complete with pouf sleeves, cheerleader-worthy chevron accents and a bedazzled panther. Go team (with a patterned skirt).

Grandma doesn't knit? No problem. Those craving that classic après–ski style have a wealth of Alp-worthy options to choose from to embrace sweater weather. For instance, the sheep that donated their fur to sweaters like this Ashley Williams checkered cable knit sweater and the following I Love Mr Mittens hand-knitted Angeline Jumper have already produced something more beautiful in their lifetimes than we could ever hope to achieve in ours.

On the Fringe

Altuzarra's Fall 2016 collection was filled with playful, Moroccan-inspired claret fringes. California-born designer Raquel Allegra, known for her textured pieces and modern bohemian aesthetic, also cosigned the tricky-to-style trend. Pair with bodycon bottoms (read: skinny jeans and pencil skirts) that accentuate your swaying sweater.

Haute Sweats

Industry insiders are forecasting a downswing in the athleisure market. Let's just say we'll believe it when we see it. In the meantime, fashion front-runners like Each x Other and Vetements continue to gild their runways in gymwear. We'll be wearing our oversized hoodies with thigh-high boots and not much else, our crew-neck fleeces with ruffled and/or embellished collars and classic pullovers with white turtlenecks and some good ol' of-the-moment jeans.

That's a Wrap

Be it a bodycon ballerina-style sweater or an oversized knitted cardigan (like this one from Acne Studios), a wrap is an absolute must-have for sweater weather. It's the ultimate everyday layering item. Hug lower-slung styles around a band tee and checked midi skirt for a cool, laid-back look. Team more kimono-influenced pieces with a bell-sleeve sweater and wide-leg pants to stay toasty and on trend.

Sleeve Tricks

We're all about polished, feminine pieces with unexpected silhouettes — in this case we're talking sleeves. Bell-shaped, draped or architectural, creative endings add new interest to a category that once relied on patterns and color for variety. Utilitarian? Not exactly. Worth the maneuvering? Without a doubt. King of the totally impractical and therefore utterly fashionable Marques'Almeida recommends styling with even flashier pants. We'd say coordinate with flares or an A-line skirt.

Not Your Dad's Half-Zip

Borrow his hat, not his Patagonia. For Fall 2016, Chloe (left), Marni and Stella McCartney made the case for sporty, half-zipped, dad-esque knits and we're ruling in favor. (Hey, sometimes bad can be quite good.) To offset looking like a walking yak and/or marshmallow, pair with straight-leg trousers or a leather or metallic (or both!) midi skirt.

Fun With Funnels

Throat-hugging silhouettes with extra long sleeves walked the Fall 2016 runways of Balenciaga (pictured here) and Victoria Beckham, among others. Cozy with contemporary touches like hi-lo hems and faux leather patches, these updated classics can be layered over dresses, paired with skirts, trousers, denim, you name it. For a more streetwear-savvy take on the trend, opt for logo-bearing turtlenecks a la Gosha Rubchinskiy (often sported by the inimitable North West).

Make a Statement

Take a page out of Kate Moss, Poppy Delevingne and Alexa Chung's lookbooks — wear a knit with meaning (however arbitrary). Up the kitsch-chic factor by pairing with a bright skirt and loafers (although Alexander Wang would recommend lampshading and leather accessories).

That image of Sigourney Weaver cuddling a pumpkin that’s floating around the Internet right now? That’s us. We may have a few scorching weeks left, but right now we’re dreaming of crunching leaves and slaloming down mountains (even though we’ve never touched a ski pole). We imagine ourselves relaxing by a softly crackling fire, sipping some sort of hot (spiked) autumnal beverage. Naturally, in said fantasy, we’re wearing a beyond cozy sweater.

We’ve had enough of sticky, hair-mortifying humidity and we’re ready for sweater weather: cashmere, cable knit, intarsia — the works. Oversized, bell-sleeved, fringed and embroidered, sweaters walked the Fall 2016 runways in all textures, patterns and sizes, giving us ample material for our après–summer mood board.

When it comes to hunting down the knits you’ll be wearing well into winter, we’ve done the legwork for you. Office-, campus- and couch-ready, click through the slideshow above to get all wrapped up in this season’s most stylish sweaters. (P.S.: Good news — you don’t have to give up the off-the-shoulder trend just yet.)
