Poor pre-fall. Love is a matter of timing and fall’s preview collections suffer an unfortunate disadvantage. This year, between our obsession with Paris’ haute couture turnout and the newly amped-up Men’s Fashion Weeks, pre-fall’s transitional wares kind of fell to the wayside. A shame, given that the Pre-Fall 2017 collections actually offered some serious hits. (Fashion girls, take note: red suits, 40s-inspired dresses, baseball hats and all manner of prints — camo, animal, kitschy — are on their way in.)
One of the more intriguing trends to emerge out of pre-fall was a perennial fave — the oversized sweater. We’re talking gargantuan. Fashion’s love of voluminous proportion is going nowhere, as demonstrated by brands like Pringle of Scotland, Ryan Roche, Edun, Spencer Vladimir, Sacai, Barbara Bui, Chloe, Victoria Victoria Beckham, M Missoni and more. And though the designers’ outsize knits would be perfectly comfortable lulling you to sleep, Netflix marathon-ing or nursing you through your Saturday morning hangover, relegating them to lazy days would be a serious mistake. After all, huge — and hygge — is in.

Despite their resemblance to actual blankets, oversized sweaters can be flattering, energetic statement pieces, if you play your styling cards right. One option is to streamline your cold-weather wardrobe by donning head-to-toe knits. The key is to go for a fitted, ribbed turtleneck and coordinating trumpet flare skirt or bell-bottom trouser. Another super soft, fail-safe look is the maxi-dress-and-outsize-sweater combo: throw on a cashmere pullover over a flowing dress (or statement slip), then polish off the look with mules and dramatic drop earrings. Still another idea involves co-opting the preppy sweater sling — a method that allows you to double up on insulation without sacrificing style.

All in all, it’s hard to find an outfit that isn’t made better by an all-encompassing knit. Because these toppers usually come in low-key solids, you’re free to get experimental with the texture, color and pattern of the rest of your outfit. The general rules are as follows: Keep things narrow and streamlined on the bottom, add on eye-catching extras (a hat, a slung-across-the-chest belt bag) and try for the element of surprise. One of our favorite trendspottings featured huge sweaters layered over outerwear. Genius, no?
