Among the standout looks at Raf Simons' highly anticipated, Americana-inspired Calvin Klein debut were a series of Canadian tuxes done in leather and (raw) denim. And Simons wasn't the only one to bring back Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake's erstwhile uniform. Take note: the new generation of Canadian tuxes comes color-coordinated and with cowboy-approved shoes.

Much like last season and the season before that, 80s trends were big on the Fall 2017 runways. One-shoulder looks, ruffles and voluminous sleeves were in large supply. Our — and Reformation's — favorite 80s reference, however, involves snappy tailoring and a (slightly) padded shoulder. Pantsuit nationalists, rejoice.

In 2016, J.Crew coined the term hookup, also known as a top and bottom in the same print. For Fall 2017, designers bought into hookup culture whilst remaining committed to layering. Louder outfits came with palette-cleansing button-downs, toned-down pairings got a dose of bright stripes or exaggerated proportion. We're loving this 90s-inspired styling trick.

Many designers (Eckhaus Latta, Veronica Beard, Sies Marjan) did away with the traditional seam for Fall 2017, opting to use more industrial closures instead. Center seam pants, while not as exciting as their buttoned, zippered and laced-up cousins, will easily stand the test of time. Thus, this is the microtrend we're keeping.

Fall's known for favoring warm tones, but something about brown is overtaking camel as the neutral du jour feels almost political. Auburn tones dominated the catwalks, usually in cushy, fall-apropos fabrics like velvet and corduroy. Again, designers favored tonal styling, though, like Becks, we enjoy our chocolate paired with strawberry.

Seven days, a couple hundred shows and a really gross blizzard later, New York Fashion Week has come to a close. You know what that means — it’s time for some trendspotting. As they are wont to do, many crazes carried over from Spring 2017. The 80s aren’t leaving us anytime soon, especially with wide, structured suit jackets now in play. The velvet trend has likewise snowballed — you’d be hard-pressed to find a show that didn’t feature the luxe, cushy fabric. Velvet is to Fall 2017 what ruffles were to Spring 2017.
In uncertain, politically fraught times, designers turned to Americana for comfort. Denim reaffirmed its fashion presence — heck, even Canadian tuxes are back. Athleisure is also in the midst of a renaissance thanks to our love of eye-grabbing legwear. (On a related note, center seams took center stage.)
The Fall 2017 runways were also full of political statements, some more overt than others. Brown replaced beige as fashion’s It neutral. Women’s designers embraced patterns, colors and silhouettes imbued with a sense of female power — cheetah prints, true reds and unapologetically feminine dresses dominated the runways.
