Problem #1: Galaxy S6 closes apps all of a sudden

The app that I am using on the phone will suddenly close and the home page will appear. If I re-open the app it either instantly closes (or does so after a short delay) and the phone reverts to the home page. Once back to the home page the Recent and Back keys light up intermittently and the phone makes a clicking sound. I have re-booted the phone in safe mode but the problem persists. It used to happen every few days but now it is occurring with increasing frequency, twice today alone. The only solution (albeit temporary) is to restart the phone. The phone has been used for less than 6 weeks and was bought from new. — Paul

Solution: Hi Paul. There’s only one thing that you can do to see if it’s a software problem — factory reset. The operating system may have been corrupted or may not be working properly. For easy reference, here are the steps to perform a factory reset:

Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.

When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.

Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.

Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.

Press the Volume Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.

After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

If factory reset won’t fix the problem, it’s highly possible that there’s a hardware problem. Bring the phone to Samsung for a warranty repair or replacement.

Problem #2: Galaxy S6 not showing SMS notifications

My Galaxy S6 now says I have a new text message. I do NOT.  And I could deal with it, except that now as new messages really do come in I get no notification at all. I happen to check the time an hour later, and it says two not one anymore. So this is unacceptable.

I tried a fix involving “Hangouts,” but that didn’t fix it. I CANNOT do a reboot or restart, WHATEVER if it will delete my text messages and here is why…this is my BUSINESS phone.

It currently takes phone calls from two numbers, and text from one. The texts from my customers go back YEARS. The info in there is ESSENTIAL to have on hand if they contact me in the field. I need to know if my work is covered by my warranty, which the date on the text will tell me, in addition to what I did then, what I charged, etc. I am not about to delete my livelihood.

So this is a glitch with the phone itself or something, considering I didn’t change any apps or anything of the sort for a long time now.

Help would be appreciated. — Toni

Solution: Hi Toni. We don’t have any clue as to what goes on in your phone so you need to perform some troubleshooting to isolate possible causes. Before you proceed, you want to make sure that your important files and messages are saved somewhere.  If you have a computer, make sure that you create a backup of your photos, videos, contacts, text messages, etc via Kies. If you don’t have a computer handy, try using Helium app from the Play Store to back up important stuff. It is important that you ensure you have properly created your backup before doing any of our suggested steps. We are not liable for any data loss that may occur following our steps.

Once a copy of your files have been created, prepare the phone for troubleshooting. The first one is to delete the app cache and data. If you use Hangouts or the native messaging app to send and receive text messages, you can follow these steps:

Go to Settings.

Proceed to Applications.

Select Manage Applications.

Tap the All tab.

Look for the messaging app you’re using and tap it.

From there, you will see the Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons.

Tapping the Clear Data button will erase everything from the messaging app so make sure that your important text messages are saved somewhere before doing this.

After deleting the cache and data of the messaging involved, observe how the phone behaves when handling text messages for a full day. If nothing changes, the next potential solution is to delete the cache partition. Here’s how it’s done:

Turn off the device.

Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.

When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.

When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.

Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’

Press the Power key to select.

When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.

Press the Power key to restart the device.

Finally, make sure to do a factory reset (steps are provided above) if the issue remains even after wiping the system cache.

Problem #3: Galaxy S6 Edge Plus won’t charge and go beyond 0%

i have a Galaxy Edge S6 Plus for about 2 months now and last night i think i was playing Pet Rescue Saga or i am Instagramming. ) can’t remember since I’m sleepy that time) the battery was at 65% at that time. i thought that i’ll charge it before sleeping but i forgot and i fell asleep playing on my phone. i woke up at 5.30am and saw that my phones battery was completely drained and won’t turn on. So i charge it and leave it. At 7 in the morning i checked it up and still 0%. The 0% was just blinking. i tried to open it to see if i can open it and charge. it will just pop up the Samsung logo and my phones unit and then back to 0% and the blinking 0% logo and charging. it’s been 4hrs and still 0%. And i’m panicking now HELP PLEASE — Roxane

Solution: Hi Roxane. Try charging your phone using another charger or USB cable. If you have a car charger or a computer, you can also test if the phone still charges when connected to either one of them. If nothing works, make sure to have the phone checked by Samsung or a qualified third party shop.

Problem #4: Galaxy S6 going into boot cycle/ boot loop

I have been experiencing issues with my phone going into a boot cycle. Originally I thought this was a hardware problem with the power button or the battery.

I first started by clearing the partition via boot menu, not the issue. I uninstalled apps one by one, not the issue. There have been some improvements, but it still occurs, on a call for more an 2 minutes. Randomly while using apps. It really started when I noticed the power button was hyper sensitive. The screen was unresponsive to sleep and wake, when it would respond it would go through rebooting itself until I removed the battery. It would power cycle on the charger.

I’ve taken great care of it, no water damage, always in a case, and the original screen protector is still good. — Nicole

Solution: Hi Nicole. The power button of some new Galaxy S6 units tend to be the first one to give up in a lot of power-related issues. If your phone is still under warranty, make sure to go to a Samsung store so they check the status of the power button, or any other hardware involved in power management. They may also have to check if the battery is still working properly.

We know that boot loop or boot cycle issue can sometimes be caused by a software glitch or bug so it will not also hurt if you perform a factory reset (steps provided above).

Problem #5: Galaxy S6 video issue when brightness is adjusted

I use Samsung S6. Apparently this problem is there with all of the same phones (I checked another phone at the store the day after I found out the problem – which was the night I bought my phone). So, when i play videos in my phone on either MX player or the built in video player, the shadows area of the videos look animated. They look fine when I adjust the brightness to the lowest value or the highest value but during the middle brightness values the darker areas of the video (the clothes behind the door which is in low light, the corners of the cars which are darker than the person sitting inside, the hands that are behind the wheel in the shadows where the driver is looking outside, etc) goes green or red apart from the regular way of showing the color present in brighter form.

It happens with games too. as I adjust the brightness I could see the color changing from green to red where there shouldn’t be any green, but everything looks OKAY at full brightness.

P.S. I am a videographer, so when I first showed it to my friends they didn’t see it until i pointed the areas with my finger, honestly it’s been a frustrating experience. I hope you would come up with something. — Ruman

Solution: Hi Ruman. The accuracy of how an Android phone renders a picture or a video does not exactly fall within our “scope” of support. This type of thing is best fixed by the hardware maker, which, in this case, is Samsung. Please contact them and ask for ways how to better fine tune the display of your phone.

Problem #6: How to configure Comcast email on Galaxy S6 to use IMAP

Because I do not want to have emails that I send to Trash on my S6 to also be sent to Trash on my Comcast email server so that I am unable receive them on my desktop running Outlook when I get home and start my desktop, I switched my email account on the S6 from IMAP to POP3.

I was advised to do this by Comcast tech support.

My problem now is that I cannot Send any emails from my S6 with the POP3 incoming server setting. So I’ve switched back to IMAP and guess I just have to be careful about not Trashing any email message on my S6 that I may want to receive and read in Outlook on my desktop.

Is it possible to send & receive emails on my S6 with a POP3 incoming server?

Thanks for any help. — Dick

Solution: Hi Dick. As far as we know, Comcast only uses POP for their email service, which is exactly not very convenient for users who access their emails on multiple devices. In order to use IMAP, you have to switch your Comcast email over to IMAP. Switching over to IMAP is easy but if you also need a reference to manually enter the server settings on your device, please refer to this table (taken from Comcast FAQ site):
