Working with screen locks is one of the first things to learn about on a new mobile device so as its security features. In terms of security, the new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge smartphone offers you with various security options to select from. You can quickly turn the screen off when not in use and turn it back on and unlock it every time you need it.
Among the available screen lock options in Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge include Swipe, Pattern, PIN, Password, Fingerprints, and None.
How to turn the Edge screen off when not in use
One way to save battery power in your mobile phone is by turning its screen off when not in use. With the Galaxy S6 Edge, this is done automatically done. By design, the new Samsung handset automatically turns off the screen after a certain period of time when you leave it idle or not in use. While in its idle state, you will still be able to receive messages and calls.
To turn the screen off quickly, just press the Power key once. When you press the Power key again or receive an incoming call, the phone screen will turn on and show the Lock screen.
Depending on your preference, you can also adjust the time before the screen turns off through Display Settings. All you have to do is to configure the display settings screen timeout option and set a screen timeout duration. Please note though that longer durations discharge the battery more quickly.
How to turn the Edge screen on and unlock it
To turn the screen on, press the Power when it’s off. Doing so will display the Lock screen. Use the screen lock option to unlock it and use the phone. Here’s how:
Press the Power key while the screen is OFF.
When the screen is ON, swipe your finger across the screen to unlock it. The phone uses Swipe method to unlock screen by default. That said, use swipe to unlock your device, if you still haven’t changed or set up a screen lock.
The screen is now unlocked.
If you already have set up a screen lock, you will be prompted to unlock your phone screen depending on the screen lock method you assigned like draw a pattern, enter a password or PIN, or scan your fingerprint. To unlock the phone’s control keys, buttons, and touchscreen, you have to draw the correct unlock pattern on the screen, enter the correct PIN, enter the correct password, or scan your fingerprint, when screen lock is enabled.
How to access Screen Lock settings on the Galaxy S6 Edge
Follow these steps to access the screen lock settings on your S6 Edge device:
Touch Apps from the Home screen.
Touch Settings to continue.
Scroll to and touch Lock screen and security.
When the Lock screen and security menu opens, touch Screen lock type. Doing so will display the Screen lock settings menu.
Touch to select the screen lock type you want to use to unlock your device.
How to change the Screen Lock on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
Touch Apps from the Home screen.
Touch Settings.
Scroll to and touch Lock screen and security.
Touch Screen lock type.
Enter the current lock information. For example, if you’re using a PIN, enter the correct PIN to proceed. If your current screen lock setting or method is Swipe or None, then there’s no need for you to enter any information.
Choose any from the available security lock you prefer and follow the on-screen prompts to activate that feature.
How to enable Smart Lock on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge comes with a Smart Lock feature that allows you to bypass your normal screen lock when you are in trusted location like your home or near a pre-selected Bluetooth device like a Samsung wearable gadget.
For you to use this feature, you need to enable or turn on Smart Lock on your device beforehand. Here’s how:
Touch Apps from the Home screen.
Touch Settings.
From the Settings screen, swipe the headings to the left. Doing so will let you view and/or access tabs in the leftmost side of the screen.
Touch to open or access the Personal tab. You will then be prompted with a list of Personal options to choose from.
Scroll to and touch to select Lock screen and security.
Scroll to and touch Secure lock settings to set your secure lock functions like Auto lock and Lock instantly with Power key. Hint: Please note that a secure lock type (NOT Swipe or NONE) must be enabled or turned on for Secure lock settings to appear in the menu.
Next, touch Smart Lock.
Enter the current screen lock information (if necessary) and touch Next to continue.
Touch Trusted devices if you want to link Smart Lock with a Bluetooth device. Otherwise, touch Trusted places, to link Smart Lock with a particular location.
For this guide, we’ll choose to link Smart Lock with a particular location, so touch Trusted places.
Select one of the suggestions from Google Maps. Alternately, touch Add trusted place to add a different location instead.
Google will now start to detect your location. To confirm it, touch the address. Hint: To search for a different location or address, touch Search.
To have multiple places turned on at once, touch the slider next to Work to enable it.
Now, press the Power/Lock key once to lock the screen and then press it again to display the lock screen.
You can use the swipe method and simply swipe the lock screen to unlock the phone when you are at a Trusted place. Hint: To force your phone to lock securely while Smart Lock is on or enabled, touch the Lock icon on the lock screen.
Read the screen prompt and touch Got It to complete the process.
How to enable Swipe Lock on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
Using the Swipe lock feature on the Galaxy S6 Edge will keep your phone from making accidental calls or opening applications while in your pocket. However, this feature offers no additional security.
Here’s how to turn on or enable Swipe Lock on your Galaxy S6 Edge handset:
Touch Apps from the Home screen.
Touch Settings.
Scroll to and touch to select Lock screen and security from the given options. Hint: If you’ve previously set up a different screen lock type, you may be required to enter your credentials to proceed.
Touch Swipe to select Swipe to unlock screen.
So when the screen is locked, just touch the screen and swipe in any direction to unlock it.
How to enable Pattern, PIN & Password Locks on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
Setting up a screen lock like Pattern, PIN and Password locks offers better protection and increase your mobile phone’s security. Here’s how to set up a pattern lock on your Galaxy S6 Edge:
Touch Apps from the Home screen.
Touch Settings.
Scroll to and touch Lock screen and security.
Touch Screen lock type. Enter your credentials if you have previously set up a different type of screen lock on your device.
Touch Pattern and continue to step 6. Note: Alternatively, touch PIN or password and follow the on-screen instructions to set up a numeric or alphanumeric password lock.
Connect at least four dots in vertical, horizontal, or diagonal directions to create a screen unlock pattern. When finished, lift your finger from the screen.
Touch Continue.
Draw the same pattern again and touch Confirm to confirm it.
Create a backup PIN of 4-16 digits to use it in case you forget your unlock pattern.
Touch Continue.
How to enable Fingerprints Lock on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
Just like a pattern, PIN or password, setting up a Fingerprints lock will also help increase your phone’s security. When the Fingerprints lock is enabled or turned on, you will need to touch your finger to the Home key to access your device.
Here’s how:
Touch Apps from the Home screen.
Touch Settings.
Scroll to and touch Lock screen and security.
Touch Screen lock type. Enter your credentials especially if you have previously set up a different type of lock on your device.
Touch Fingerprints.
When prompted, read and review the Disclaimer and touch Confirm to proceed.
Now, touch your finger to the Home key and then lift it. Repeat until you see the indicator reaches 100%. Hint: To make sure your whole finger is recorded, move your finger slightly each time you touch the key, fully covering the key with your finger.
Create a backup password to use it to verify your identify if you cannot use fingerprint recognition.
Touch Continue.
Enter the password again to confirm it and then touch OK when done.
On the next screen, select the display options for notifications on the lock screen, and choose whether to show notifications with content, without content or not at all. 12. For this guide, we’ll choose Show content so touch Show content and then touch Done to proceed.
Fingerprints lock is now activated on your device. You may now try it to see how it works. Follow these steps:
Lock the phone by pressing the Power/Lock key.
Press the Power/Lock key to show the lock screen.
Touch your registered finger to the Home key to unlock your phone.
Just wait for the phone to recognize your fingerprint and unlock your device.
How to add Fingerprint Locks on the Galaxy S6 Edge
You can register more than one fingerprints when Fingerprints lock is enabled on your S6 Edge device. Here’s how:
Touch Apps from the Home screen.
Touch Settings.
Scroll to and touch Lock screen and security.
Touch Fingerprints.
Touch your registered finger to the Home key to unlock your device. Note: Touch Backup Password to enter or key-in the password registered during your first fingerprint lock setup.
Touch Add fingerprint from Manage fingerprints menu options.
Touch your finger to the Home key and then lift it. Repeat until the indicator reaches 100%. Again, to make sure your whole finger is recorded, move your finger slightly each time you touch the key, fully covering with your finger.
Your fingerprint is now successfully added or registered. Note: You can touch any registered finger to the Home key to access your phone.
How to customize the Galaxy S6 Edge Screen Lock
After you enable your preferred type of screen lock for your device, you will have access to additional options available in the Lock screen menu. You can use these options to customize your lock screen. Here’s how:
Touch Apps from the Home screen.
Touch Settings.
Scroll to and touch Lock screen and security.
You will then see the Lock screen and security options. These options may vary depending on the type of lock screen selected. You can touch any of the given options to learn more and know its use.
Working with Lock Screen Notifications
You can still view notifications like notifications of new messages, even when your phone is locked. Here’s how:
Touch Apps from the Home screen.
Touch Settings.
Scroll to and touch Sounds and notifications.
Scroll to and touch Notifications on lock screen.
Select any from Show content, Hide content, and Do not show notifications options to continue.
For this guide, we’ll choose Show content so touch Show content and continue to step 7. Hint: Show content option shows all notifications. Hide content will display only minimal notifications with no content preview. Do not show notifications prevent all notifications on the lock screen.
Press the Power/Lock key once to lock the screen.
Press the Power/Lock key again to show the lock screen.
How to hide notification content for specific applications
When you select Show content as your lock screen notifications preference and a Pattern, PIN, Password, or Fingerprints screen lock, you can set certain apps to limit the amount of notification information displayed on your lock screen. Here’s how:
Touch Apps from the Home screen.
Touch Settings.
Touch Sounds and notifications.
Scroll to and touch App notifications. Hint: Notifications on lock screen must be set to Show content for you to be able to hide content for specific applications.
Scroll to and touch the desired applications from the App notifications menu.
For this guide, we’ll choose Gmail so touch Gmail and proceed to the next step.
Touch the slider next to Hide content on lock screen to enable or turn it on. Notification content for specific apps will now be hidden.
What to do when you forget your Pattern, PIN, Password or Fingerprints Lock
Sometimes, you can’t help but forget your unlock pattern for your device. Here’s what you can do in case you forget your unlock screen method and can’t access your device.
For Forgotten Pattern:
If this happens, you can use the backup PIN you chose when you created the lock. In case you don’t remember the backup PIN, you will be given the option to Unlock via Google after five unsuccessful attempts. This means you can unlock your device with your Google account credentials.
For Forgotten PIN:
In case you forget your PIN, you can contact Samsung support or phone carrier for further assistance to unlock your device using other methods available.
For Forgotten Password:
If you forget your Password, you also need to contact Samsung support or phone carrier for further assistance.
For Forgotten Fingerprints:
Your other option in case you forget which fingerprints you used to unlock your device, just enter the backup PIN you choose when you created the lock for your device.
Creating a screen lock is highly recommended to increase the security of your phone. To secure your phone and data from any unauthorized access, use the highest security level available — Password protection. Frequently changing of password is also recommended to ensure the safety of your phone and personal data.
