Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Troubleshooting Series [Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3] [Part 4]

Internet Browsers Crash on Galaxy Note 4

Problem: Hello, I have a Galaxy Note 4 and within the last 3 days, my Internet browsers crash. Both Chrome and the Samsung browser. I’ve went to the applications menu and cleared data and cache for both. Restarted the phone and have took the battery out of phone and it still happens. Any ideas here? Thanks. — Brandon

Troubleshooting: Hi, Brandon. I’m curious to know what when and how this problem started. I’m sure that at some point, these browsers were working fine. There could be an app that’s causing all this. I suggest you boot your Note 4 in safe mode and observe:

Turn off the phone completely.

Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.

When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Vol Down key until the phone finished restarting.

Safe mode will be display at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

While in safe mode, try to open both browsers to find out if they still crash. If not, then a third-party app has been causing the problem. Find it and either uninstall it for good or just disable it. However, if the problem remained, then the problem is more serious than we thought. It could be an issue with the firmware and factory reset is necessary to address this.

How Get Rid Of Galaxy Note 4 Talking Calculator

Problem: Hi, I have note 4 T-Mobile and my calculator speaks every number I press. All my talkback features are off. I’ve tried so many different settings to try and turn off the speaking calculator. Do you know how I can turn this feature off? Thank you in advance. — Marie

Troubleshooting: Hi Marie. You’re not the only one that’s experiencing this problem. In fact, I’ve already addressed this issue in the 2nd and 3rd parts of this series. So, instead of parroting what I said in those posts, I suggest you visit those posts to fix this problem:

Authentication Error When Adding Email Account

Problem: Hi guys I am trying to add a 3rd email account to my device but it keeps coming up either authentication error or cannot connect to server safely. I have successfully put a Gmail and yahoo acc on but no luck with outlook any ideas. Thank you, Mark.

Troubleshooting: Hi Mark! Have you tried accessing that account through your computer or via webmail? Authentication error pops up when the username and the password don’t match, then other error has something to do with server settings. So, make sure all data you entered are correct. If this a company email your trying to add, I suggest you contact your IT guys to help you with it.

Note 4 Turns Back On If Turned Off

Problem: Hi my Samsung note 4 has just started powering back on when you power it off. It wont stay off. And yes I am pressing power off not restart. Any ideas how to fix this issue. It used to power off and stay off until I turned it on. Thanks. — Tracy

Troubleshooting: Hi Tracy! There are two possibilities here; either the Power key is just stuck or totally damaged. One way to address stuck buttons is to press them multiple times until they work again. So, please try to do that to see if you can fix the problem. If not, then there’s nothing much you can do about it but have the phone checked by a technician.

Note 4 Has Slow Response When Typing Text

Problem: So when I text sometimes when I type it takes at least four to 5 seconds for the actual letter to appear or even make the noise when you tap then….note four is slow in general when typing or switching page ore when i type on a app takes forever to start apps….also when i clicked on your email it didn’t go to my email to send you one with your email in the header it went to a blank page. Thanks. — Dana

Troubleshooting: Hello Dana. First off, the Note 4 is one of the most powerful smartphones in the market today and it shouldn’t be doing that when you type. The thing is, I don’t know for sure how often “sometimes” is with you and under what condition the phone slows down. It this problem happens only while you are texting, the problem could either be caused by the Messaging app or the keyboard you’re using. Since you didn’t mention a third-party keyboard, I would assume you’re using the stock one.

Assuming the problem is with the messaging app and the keyboard, it can be fixed by simply clearing the cache and the data of both apps.

From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.

Tap Settings and scroll to ‘Applications’ section.

Touch Application Manager.

Swipe left or right to display contents of ‘ALL’ tab.

Scroll to and tap the messaging app.

Tap the Clear cache button.

Tap the Clear data button, the OK.

Go back to find Samsung keyboard and tap on it.

Tap the Clear cache button.

Tap the Clear data button, the OK. (Please note that added words may be deleted when you do this.)

This simple procedure will fix the problem if it’s limited to those apps. However, if the problem remained after this, then it’s time to consider another possibility: the reason why it would take so long for the letters to appear is because the phone hangs frequently.

That said, you should shift your focus from text problem to performance issue. One of the most common reasons why the phone hangs is due to a third-party app that may have gone rogue or crashed. To verify this, you need to boot your phone in safe mode:

Turn off the phone completely.

Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.

When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Vol Down key until the phone finished restarting.

Safe mode will be display at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

In safe mode, observe if the phone still hangs. If so, then there’s a more serious issue with the firmware. That said, you need to perform full hard reset on your phone but backup your data first before you do that.

Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.

Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.

When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.

When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Vol Up key.

Using the Volume Down key, highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.

Now highlight ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Vol Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.

When the master reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key.

The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup.

If, however, the problem was fixed in safe mode, then the cause of the problem is one of the third-party apps. Still reset would fix the issue but if you know which app it was, you can uninstall it to fix the problem.

Note 4 Using Almost All Of Its RAM

Problem: Help! Just purchased my note4 about a month ago and have installed limited apps. The phone continues to run slow and after installing a few app managers and ram monitoring (tried 360 security, clean master and cm security) all these apps are claiming my phone consistently runs at about 80-90% ram capacity. I’ll kill all the apps but it only fixes it temporarily. Additionally, I’ve disabled and used the Uninstaller to get rid of superfluous apps. Any idea what could be making this phone run slow? Thanks. — JT

Troubleshooting: If you were thinking that the reason why your phone is slow is because it has used up almost all of its RAM, you may be wrong. Android system, or any Unix-based systems, works that way; it tends to use up all its RAM for caching so that the phone could function better, smoother and faster. Unused RAM is wasted RAM!

Android has it’s own task and RAM manager and they’re working better than any other task killers or cleaners available in the Play Store. If I were you, I wouldn’t worry so much about the RAM usage of the phone, rather, I will look into things that might be causing the problem.

Try booting the phone in safe mode and observe if it still runs slow with all third-party apps disabled. If so, the problem is with the firmware and if there’s no available update, I suggest you reset it. If the problem remained after the reset, bring the phone to your provider and have their technician re-flash the firmware to avoid nulling your warranty.

If in case the phone performs faster in safe mode, it means that the apps you installed were causing the problem. I’m pretty sure factory reset will fix it for you. After that, install each app one by one to know which one causes the problem.

Note 4 Samsung Galaxy Has Stopped Error

I am getting this message when i am opening my gallery in note 4.Let me know pls why i am getting this message and what i have to do for not occurring this again and also pls let me know is there any problem to my phone because of this message. Troubleshooting: The error message doesn’t just speak about a service but a collection of apps and services that came with the phone’s firmware including Samsung apps. I am curious to know how this problem started as I’ve encountered this issue with other Galaxy devices as well. Luckily, it can be fixed by a normal factory reset. So, if you can still access your phone, backup your data then proceed with factory reset:

From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.

Launch Settings and scroll to ‘User and Backup’ section.

Tap Backup and reset.

If you want, you can tick the checkboxes next to Automatic restore and Back up my data.

Tap Factory data reset.

Touch Reset device.

You may be asked to enter your PIN or Password.

Tap Continue and then Delete all.

Scroll to and tap Google Play Store.

Tap Uninstall updates.

Galaxy Note 4 Freezes and Lags Often

Problem: Hello, I was reading your former posts and I have a question to add. My Note 4 is with the Sprint network and when I first got it, everything was working perfectly! I loved it, but now it’s only been a few weeks and the phone has started to freeze and lag quite a bit. At least 30 different times throughout my day. I first noticed this problem when I installed a MicroSD card, but then I formatted it and removed when I noticed the issues. I installed it again and noticed no problems after the format. A few days later however, the phone started lagging and freezing on the home screen and when opening random apps, especially with the messaging stock app. The keyboard would at times also freeze and take a long time to respond to my touches. So, I once again formatted the memory card and decided to just remove it and not use it again in hopes that the phone would work again.

Well, that didn’t happen. The phone is still continuing to freeze and lag. Especially the keyboard when I attempt to type. The apps will sometimes take a long time to open and the phone has actually rebooted on me a few times the past month. The most annoying issue, however, is the lock screen. I have it set to a pin code lock screen and ALOT of the time, it will just turn on very dimly (not full brightness as it should) and it won’t recognize my touch. It will just turn back off until I turn it on again. Sometimes, I have to do this 5 or 6 times before it finally works. I have not tried factory resetting it because I have alot of accounts and apps and preferred settings that took me forever to set up. Is there any other way to solve my problem? Thank you, Bianca.

Troubleshooting: Hello Bianca. Thank you for being thorough with your description. Performance issues are complicated to deal with because we don’t know for sure what causes them but one thing to isolate the problem is to boot your phone in safe mode. Please follow these steps:

Turn off the phone completely.

Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.

When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Vol Down key until the phone finished restarting.

Safe mode will be display at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

Now, observe if your phone still lags and freezes. In this state, only pre-installed apps and services are running; all third parties are temporarily disabled. If one or more of the third-party apps were causing the problem, then the phone should be functioning like brand new while in safe mode. Otherwise, the problem is with the firmware or pre-installed apps but regardless which of these two groups caused the problem, it can be fixed by full hard reset.

I understand that you have a lot of data, accounts and whatnot in your phone. But I don’t think you have other options for now.

Note 4 Video Recording Question

Question: Hello, I use my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 as a dashcam. When the sun is low on the horizon in front of me I turn it off. I would like to be able to leave it running but I don’t know if the sun will damage the camera sensor. Is it safe to record video with the sun in frame? Thank you for your attention. Sincerely, Jamie.

Answer: Hey, Jamie. There were several recorded events wherein point-and-shoot camera sensors got damaged while trying to capture the sun at its zenith. So, yes, the possibility is always there but it totally depends how long the sensor is exposed to the sun. However, if the sun is already setting, there’s minimal heat and it isn’t enough to burn the sensor.
