By definition, a cache refers to a repository for stored information that is used to expedite the process of retrieving data. Caches are used to speed up a process so that data does not have to be recomputed or fetched from its original location, thus, saves time.

Caching is used by Internet browsers for storing HTML webpages by storing a copy of the visited pages and then use that copy when you re-visit that page. Browser caches are useful when users hit the Back button or click a link to view a page they’ve just looked at or if you use the same navigation images throughout a website.

Corrupted caches however can trigger problems on the browser itself and affect browser performance. This is when you need to clear browser caches on your device.

Cookies refer to small text files that are stored on your device’s browser directory or program data subfolders. In layman’s term, they are a small file of letters and numbers downloaded to your device when you visit certain website. They’re like virtual door keys that unlock the device’s memory and let a website recognize users when they return to that site by opening doors to various content or services. Cookies are often used in websites with large databases, require logins, other advanced features.

There are two types of cookies namely, session cookies and persistent cookies. Session cookies are temporarily created in your browser’s subfolder while you are visiting a website. Once you leave the site, these cookies will also be deleted. Persistent cookies on the other hand, are files that remain in your browser’s subfolder and are re-activated the next time you visit the website that created that particular cookie. These files stay in the browser’s subfolder for the duration period set within the cookie’s file.

However, too much cookies stored in the browser can also trigger some browsing issues to occur on the device like slow browsing for instance. This is why clearing the browser cookies is likewise recommended.

This provides users with a Back button and/or a history list to go back to pages they have previously visited, when necessary, rather than relying on the user to remember where they’ve been on the web.

While browser history offers benefits, accumulating too much of these data can also affect browsing experience in the long run. This is why regular clearing of the browser history is necessary.
