Lovingly restored from its historic status as a 19th Century “Ice Store”, the Ice House Luxury Hotel Ireland is a member of Ireland’s Blue Book of Irish Country Houses, Historic Hotels & Restaurants and enjoys the sort of unfussed, modern panache expected of a contemporary rustic retreat, two centuries later. The Ice House History

The Ice House (originally called Iceland Cottage or Iceland House) in Ballina, County Mayo is located on the east bank of the River Moy in an area known as Crocketstown. The ice store incorporated within the house is older than the rest of the building. A similar solution was employed in Maidenhead, Castle Hill, Berkshire, where two large ice pits were constructed in 1850 by a local fishmonger called William Hamblett. When he died c. 1890, the pits fell into disuse and his widow constructed a tall, two storeys building over them to utilize the ground. The Ice House, however, retained function as an ice store subsequent to its incorporation into domestic residence. Even in its residential capacity, the building served a functional purpose: while the basement was used as a cold store for salmon exports, the rest of the house itself was used to accommodate the manager of the Moy Fishery Company.

The Pier Restaurant Ballina at The Ice House Mayo Boutique Hotel has become a favourite amongst locals and returning guests alike – with its comfortable banquette seating, interlocking bar, fabulous outdoor riverside terrace, unusual selection of vodkas and long list of wine and cocktails. Pier Restaurant at The Ice House is an ideal place to host parties, enjoy candlelit romantic evenings or simply to wind down to dinner with friends.

With its buzzing atmosphere and glass-walled riverside location, the 2 AA Rosette restaurant is often open well in to the starry night.
